The City of Fountain Valley is looking for energetic, self-motivated, reliable individuals who possess a great attitude, have a desire to learn, can successfully multi-task and have a PASSION for providing excellent customer service. The Recreation & Community Services Department is currently hiring Recreation Specialists and Leaders. These positions will be responsible for assisting in the coordination and supervision of a variety of recreation programs including adult and youth sports leagues, senior services, special events, facility rentals, park patrol, perform field operations at the Fountain Valley Sports Park, and other activities.  The Recreation & Community Services Team is a collaborative, dynamic, and dedicated group that understands the work they do matters and takes pride in providing high-quality services to the community.

CLASS DEFINITION
Assist in the coordination and supervision of a variety of recreation programs including adult and youth sports, senior services, special events, facility management and other activities.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 
The Recreation Leader is the entry-level position responsible for assisting the Recreation Specialist and/or full-time recreation staff in administering and coordinating recreation programs and activities.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The Recreation Leader works under the direct supervision of the Recreation Specialist and/or full-time recreation staff.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Assist in the coordination of recreation programs including adult and youth sports, senior services, special events, contract classes, and other recreational activities.
  • Perform a variety of general administrative duties including, but not limited to: answer telephones, assist customers, collect fees, and maintain attendance records.
  • Promote the safety of all program participants.
  • Assist with the set-up and take-down of tables, chairs, and sports equipment for all facility activities and special events.
  • Oversee the regular operations of a community center, fields, and gymnasium facility.
  • Respond to patrons' needs for assistance and information in person, via email and over the phone.
  • Operate a variety of standard office equipment including computer.
OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES:
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
  • Present enrollment in high school.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by college level coursework in recreation, physical education, or a related field is highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Some leadership experience and participation in recreation activities.
  • Previous experience coordinating recreational activities, preferably in a municipal setting is highly desirable.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Municipal recreation practices is desirable.
  • Customer service techniques.
REQUISITE ABILITIES:
  • Lead and work effectively with program participants.
  • Leadership and organization to provide recreation activities.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, City officials, and the public.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, follow oral and written instructions.
  • Deal effectively and courteously with the public.
  • Use a computer and a variety of computer software.
  • Learn, understand, and apply relevant policies and procedures.
  • Lifting and moving tables and chairs and arranging facilities for special events, and/or meetings.
  • Maintaining facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
  • Must be available to work weekends and evenings as needed.
PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment requiring prolonged sitting or standing; walking, kneeling, crouching, squatting, stooping, and bending; input data into a computer terminal; exposure to computer glare, vibrations, and pitch; ability to lift, carry and move objects totaling approximately 25 pounds in weight; and have mobility, vision, hearing, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
