What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Associate - Children's Section position at City of Friendswood?
The City of Friendswood is currently accepting applications for a part-time Library Associate, in the Library Department. This position will provide assistance to patrons from the juvenile desk during all open hours, assisting at circulation and reference as needed; identify and interpret user needs; assisting patrons in material selection and retrieval; assist in the provision of library programs and outreach to the community.
Work Performed:
- Provide reference and customer service in person, by phone, or electronic request from service desk
- Plan, create materials, and present storytimes onsite or in the community
- Assist the children's librarian by planning and running the Summer Reading Program's weekly storytimes, crafts, and special presentations; as well as additional special programs throughout the year.
- Fill in for the children's librarian as needed
- Teach young patrons skills needed for library research
- Review new material for content in juvenile area
- Conduct class and group tours
- Assist children's librarian with coordinating and booking performers for special programs
- Reads shelves to ensure proper order
- Supervise community service and other volunteers; organize and assign duties for teen volunteer program
- Performs other duties within areas of responsibility as assigned
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university, preferably in education
- Undergraduate courses in children's literature, and training in storytelling preferred
- 1-2 years of experience working in a library, with the public, and working with children (which may be substituted for years of education)
