Under general direction, performs skilled work related to the graffiti abatement program; may work alone or be part of a small crew removing graffiti from buildings, signs, and other surfaces throughout the City; performs custodial, general maintenance and other related duties as assigned.
Representative Duties
Schedule and coordinate the removal of graffiti using the proper maintenance and abatement equipment, supplies and technical skills; responsible for monitoring requests for service and follow up with customers; checks buildings and facilities to determine painting needs; performs skilled painting using spray, roller and brush in a wide variety of painting work on buildings, structures and facilities; mixes and matches paints; estimates supply needs and requisitions as needed; maintains simple records; supervises assigned helpers. Must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the job, including some weekends and holidays.
Organizational Responsibilities
This is a skilled journeyman-level Class position in the Public Works Department that reports to the Street Maintenance Superintendent. Works independently or as part of a small crew on approved projects and maintenance programs. Supervises helpers as assigned.
Education and ExperienceGraduation from high school or equivalent G.E.D., AND three (3) years of recent experience performing Journey level painting, custodial and general maintenance work in a public, commercial or industrial setting, or any combination of training and experiencing totally three years that provides the required knowledge and skill sets.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the paints, equipment and standard practices used in the painting of buildings and other exterior surfaces; of the characteristics and uses of alternative paints; of wood and metal surfaces; ability to mix and match paints; to prepare and finish wood and metal surfaces; to estimate quantities and time required for various projects; to follow written and oral instructions; to supervise the work of helpers; must have skill in performing spray, roller and brush painting; ability to maintain equipment in clean and working order; ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; to work with others to insure the scheduled work is done effectively; to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to develop work schedules making efficient use of all equipment, supplies and personnel.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Regular work schedule includes weekends; overtime required on an as-needed basis. Requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend; must have the mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; requires lifting, pushing and/or pulling. This position is performed in indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to the elements. May be required to work in inclement weather, in damp conditions and in confined spaces; may be exposed to chemicals, solvents, paint, dust and vehicular traffic. Daily tasks require frequent and repetitive motions including the ability to crouch, sit, walk, crawl, kneel, twist, climb ladders and may require lifting material of 25 pounds or more. Actual working conditions vary based on specific worksites.
License
Must have and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License, Class C.
