Position Summary
Responsible for serving as a non-supervisory, lead librarian of the Library Technical Services Department, interpreting and enforcing policies and practices related to the bibliographic database and library collections, as well as monitoring the effectiveness of the library’s outsourcing vendors. Also responsible for performing professional librarian duties of original and copy cataloging of library materials to ensure patron and staff access. May support activities related to online resources and web page design, as required.

Essential Job Functions
Act as a lead librarian for the technical services department, which is responsible for the annual acquisitions of approximately $1M of library materials, both physical and digital, and may oversee cataloging and processing operations, and the interlibrary loan department, in the absence of the Technical Services Manager.
Resolve patron issues/complaints related to the interlibrary loan service by adhering to library policies and procedures, and using the interlibrary loan software.
Consult with library managers regarding the integrated software library system and collections.
Create statistical reports as required.
Create, maintain, and/or update bibliographic and authority records for digital, media, serials, foreign language and print materials within international, national and professional standards and assures their accuracy.
Perform original cataloging of print and non-print materials according to local, state and national standards (RDA, AACR2, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, MARC formatting) to add to the Library’s bibliographic database.
Prepare documentation and training tools and participate in delivery of staff training sessions.
Participate in the budget process for an assigned area of specialization.
Provide expertise to staff regarding the retrieval of information via the library’s online catalog.
Provide expertise to patrons regarding the retrieval of information from the library’s collections and via the library’s online catalog.
Carry out special projects as assigned and serves on the library’s technology team.team.
Minimum Education & Work Experience
Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university 3 years of professional library cataloging experience 2 years of original and copy cataloging experience of digital formats, media, serials and foreign language print and media Cataloging utilizing local, state and national standards including but not limited to (RDA, AACR2, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, MARC) Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills
Education/ Experience:
- 3-5 years of professional library cataloging experience
- 2-4 years of original and copy cataloging experience of digital formats, audiovisual media, serials and foreign language print and media
- 1 or more years of experience acting as lead librarian of a public library technical services department in the absence of a manager or supervising librarian
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of local, state and national standards including but not limited to (RDA, AACR2, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, MARC)
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Ability to work cooperatively and congenially with others, individually and in a team

Licenses & Certifications

Physical Tasks & Working Conditions
The incumbent works in a typical library environment but some physical labor, exposure to dust and travel between library facilities, may occur. Physical tasks may include lifting, squatting, bending, stooping, walking, and carrying supplies, as needed, to accomplish the tasks of the activity on a daily basis. Must be able to reach materials at 90” height shelving or shelving at floor level, lift/carry up to 50 pounds infrequently, and push/pull a 200 pound wheeled book cart. Must also be able to utilize keyboard and peripherals, and operate a telephone. Primary environment will be in a climate controlled, indoor atmosphere.
