JOB SUMMARY:
Under general direction of Police Chief, conducts inspections of residential and commercial properties in the city to determine if violations of city codes and environmental law exists with specific reference to zoning and other ordinances. Does occasional evening and weekend work. Performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
§ Visually and physically inspects residential and commercial properties, as assigned by supervisor, for compliance with city codes and zoning ordinances.
§ Interprets and enforces minimum property codes and regulations and works with the public to ensure compliance when violations are found.
§ Issues court citations for violations when required and attends court cases where violations have been filed
§ Assigns work to, and coordinates with, city contractors; coordinates duties with other city departments involved in code enforcement;
§ Maintains accurate records of complaints and inspections made; and prepares reports and other written communication.
§ Operates personal computer for word processing.
§ Communicates courteously and effectively with the public, officials, and other city employees, in person, in writing, and by telephone.
§ Keeps records, handles citizens’ complaints; maintains working relationship with city departments, municipal court and Judge.
§ Understands and adheres to all Federal, State, County and local ordinances and laws.
§ Enforces law and regulations pertaining to littering and illegal dumping.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Prepares and gives presentations to neighborhood associations and homeowner groups. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSES:
Bachelor's degree preferred, or be certified by TCLEOSE or have successfully completed one year as a Code Enforcement Officer. Must also have State of Texas code enforcement officer certificate, or obtain this within one year of appointment. Valid Texas driver's license, Class C.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
Basic computer keyboard skills required. Must have knowledge of pertinent codes and ordinances administered by the Code Enforcement department; knowledge of legal procedures involving enforcement of codes and ordinances; knowledge of inspection techniques. Must have ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in person or by telephone with the public in the English language. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, and communicate courteously with departmental personnel, other city employees, contractors, and the public. Must have ability to deal effectively with code enforcement problems and able to effectively prepare letters and reports.
