We are accepting applications for a Utility Worker I or II (depending on qualifications) for our Wastewater Collection Division of the Public Works Department. There is one full time opening on this crew.

The primary duties for the Utility Worker I and Utility Worker II for the Wastewater Collection Division is:

  • Completes wastewater system cleaning with use of proper nozzle selection and pressure selection based upon the size and type of pipe.
  • Inspects and assists with needed repairs of stormwater manholes and pipes for cracked and/or broken interior and exterior structures.
  • Assists with and operates the TV truck to complete precise inspections of the collection system.
  • Trims brush and other vision hazards along drainageways, planters, and alleyways, mows grasses, and removes berries and other invasive plants.
  • Inspects, cleans and maintains drainage system including ditches, inlets, lines, and storm drain catch basins, and reports blockages or other issues to the Superintendent.

This position is covered in the Teamsters bargaining unit and incumbents must live within a 30 minute drive of their regularly assigned work site.

Minimum Qualifications

Utility Worker I - Minimum Qualifications
Wage Range: $20.3932 to $25.8039 per hour depending on qualifications

A High School Diploma or equivalent and 1 year of related experience, are required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed in the job description.

At time of hire:

  • Valid Oregon Driver’s License Class C

In addition, within 12 months of appointment incumbents require:

  • Oregon Certified Flagger
  • Valid Oregon Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tanker endorsement
  • Forklift Certificate

Incumbents may be required to obtain CPR certification, Competent Person certification, and/or Confined Space Entrant, Attendant and/or Supervisor certification. Employees assigned to Wastewater Collection and Streets and Drainage will be required to obtain NASSCO Pipeline Assessment (PACP) and Manhole Assessment (MACP) certificates. Incumbents must be in possession of or have the ability to obtain any certification or license required by City, State or Federal agencies to work in assigned position.

Utility Worker II - Minimum Qualifications
Wage Range: $21.9229 to $27.7392 per hour depending on qualifications
A High School Diploma or equivalent and 2 years of directly related experience in a utility environment are required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed in the job description.

At time of hire:

  • Valid Oregon Driver’s License Class C and Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tanker endorsement
  • Forklift Certificate
  • Oregon Certified Flagger
  • Oregon DEQ Wastewater Collection II Certificate or NPDES Stormwater Inspector Certificate
  • NASSCO Pipeline Assessment (PACP) and Manhole Assessment (MACP) Certificates

Incumbents may be required to obtain CPR certification, Confined Space Entrant, Attendant and/or Supervisor Certification, and/or a specific Competent Person certification. Incumbents must be in possession of or have the ability to obtain any certification or license required by City, State or Federal agencies to work in assigned position.

Ranking and Selection

The ranking and selection of applicants to proceed in the process includes: experience and knowledge, education, responses to supplemental questionnaire, submission of required materials and meeting minimum qualifications and special qualifications of the position.

The initial process may include oral interviews and skills testing. Final selection will require a background investigation, including a criminal history review, and, depending on the position, a psychological screening, physical, functional and/or drug screening.
