Job Summary

The Seasonal Animal Care Assistant assists staff in feeding and caring for a variety of farmyard animals. Duties include assisting in the feeding and care of a variety of farmyard animals under direction from other staff. The position will work an average of 10-15 hours a week depending on animal care needs from Early April until late September.  

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

Minimum Requirements

  • Three (3) months experience in animal care including both small and large livestock including knowledge of and practice in, feeding, cleaning, supply organization, welfare monitoring, and safety handling procedures. 
  • Three (3) months of feed and supply organizational experience including stocking, organizing, and monitoring usage of feed and supplies. 
  • Valid CO driver’s license and good driving record.

Preferred

  • Three (3) months of animal healthcare experience including first aid for common injuries, and knowledge of common illnesses.

  • Collaboration skills, including the ability to work with others from different areas and backgrounds to reach a common goal. 
  • Computer skills, including the ability to utilize Microsoft Office programs (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and learn and experiment with new software and systems.
  • Interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate interaction, communication, and teamwork between others.
  • Oral, written, and listening communication skills, including the ability to accurately interpret what others are saying and convey messages, information, concepts, and details accurately and clearly.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ages.
  • Experience working with audiences from children to seniors in informal or formal learning environments.
  • Knowledge of and interest in Greeley, Weld County, and Colorado history.
  • Knowledge of or interest in historic skillsets ranging from skills such as fiber craft, historic cooking, blacksmithing, printing, and/or similar others.
  • Animal care experience with small and/or large livestock including knowledge of and practice in, feeding, cleaning, supply organization, welfare monitoring, and safety handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and best practices, including customer needs assessments, meeting quality service standards, and evaluating customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of incident response and handling methodologies.
  • Customer service skills, including the ability to actively listen, address customer needs, defuse tense situations, and maintain an open, flexible, and friendly demeanor.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures all animals in museum’s care are properly fed, watered, and have clean and proper bedding.  
  • Monitors animal’s health and contact supervisor/owner veterinarian if healthcare needs arise. 
  • Provides basic first aid to animals within level of experience under guidance from animal owner/veterinarian. 
  • Moves animals to and from pens/coops for events, cleaning, and other purposes. 
  • Assists in creating supply and feed lists for purchasing.  
  • Maintains tools and equipment, barn storage areas, and other spaces where work is accomplished. 
  • Sets-up & takes-down animal pens and coops for events involving animal participation. 
  • Operates city vehicles and UTVs to pick up and move around animal feed and needed supplies.  
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public. 
  • Assists in training other employees and volunteers in animal care procedures.  
  • Works independently as well as with others, including handling difficult situations using tact, patience, and good judgment. 
  • Always follow workplace and livestock safety practices and procedures. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Work is conducted primarily outside with exposure to a variety of weather including but not limited to extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, snow, excessive wind, and similar. 
  • Work fixed hours in early mornings and afternoons to feed and care for livestock. 
  • Work around small and large livestock in stalls, pens, coops, and similar, always maintaining situational awareness.  
  • Incumbent may be exposed to loud amplified sound equipment while working grounds. 
  • Manual labor, prolonged standing, kneeling, bending, and walking, climbing ladders and stairs. 
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds on a frequent basis.  
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds occasionally. 
  • Ability to lift arm above shoulder level and to move objects. 
  • Manual dexterity enough to operate hand and power tools. 
  • Vision enough to perform above functions and to read printed instructions. 
  • Exposure to vegetation that can cause punctures, biting insects, wildlife, off-leash dogs.
