What are the responsibilities and job description for the Emergency Vehicle Mechanic position at City of Hampton?
Performs, in a team environment, responsible and complex work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of Fire and Rescue vehicles and equipment to include mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems.
Performs duties under the direct supervision of Fire/Ambulance Team Lead who will serve as a trainer to provide the necessary guidance and instruction. Receives assignments and supervision from assigned Fire/Ambulance Team Lead and/or Operations Manager. Incumbent must be self-motivated, flexible, results- oriented and committed to excellent customer service. Must be willing to work day or evening shift. May require irregular hours and is subject to call-out during inclement weather, nights and weekends, as determined by management. Must possess a complete set of automotive mechanic tools at all times while in this position. Requires moderately strenuous physical exertion on occasion; requires working at heights up to eighty-five (85) feet. This position is considered essential personnel in times of emergency or as assigned. This is a non-exempt position.
- Repairs and maintains various types of emergency vehicles, such as pumpers, aerials, ambulances and other vehicles. Abides by all policies for inspection, maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Travels to customer sites for repairs as needed.
- Performs preventative maintenance, major repairs and inspections on fire pumps and pump controls, aerial devices, heavy truck components, hydraulic systems, air brakes and electrical systems. Performs road tests on vehicles in order to assure proper operating levels.
- Reads and follows simple to complicated instructions, schematics and other information contained in repair manuals for the diagnosis and repair of fire and EMS vehicles and equipment.
- Works with team members to develop and implement improved processes and procedures to enhance efficiency and effectiveness and to adhere to safety rules and procedures.
- Possesses knowledge of safety hazards and precautions. Monitors and advises all safety related issues related the shop area, vehicles and wherever maintenance is being performed.
- Processes and tracks repair orders. Operates computer to document repair work and maintenance on a daily basis.
- Ensures shop cleanliness and maintenance on a regular basis.
- May work on heavy, specialized Hampton Police Division vehicles or equipment.
- Demonstrates reliable attendance and punctuality.
