Position Summary:

The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is a licensed individual who has the accountability and responsibility to provide nursing care within the scope of their practice and in a manner consistent with their role and function at City of Hope. The LVN performs basic nursing services, administers medications, applies communication skills for the purpose of patient and family care and education, and contributes to the development and implementation of a teaching plan related to self-care for the patient and family.

In alignment with City of Hope Orange County’s mission and values, the Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services vision and mission, and with continuous focus on the patient, family, and community, uses and practices basic assessment (data collection), documents appropriately, participates in planning, executes interventions in accordance with the care plan or treatment plan, and contributes to evaluation of individualized interventions related to the care plan or treatment plan.

Essential Functions:

  • Understands and applies the City of Hope Code of Conduct, Code of Organizational Ethics, policies, procedures, performance and quality improvement objectives, promotion of a culture of service excellence, attendance, safety, environmental and infection control guidelines. Maintains integrity and confidentiality.
  • Assures that a positive service image is projected in all encounters with patients, visitors, and department staff. Provides accurate, reliable, courteous, and timely services to all customers.
  • Initiates care by accurately gathering clinical data, properly identifying patients, and ensuring accuracy of identification and documentation in the medical record.
  • Review’s patient plan of care and initiates care as ordered while following City of Hope policies and procedures assists with procedures and performs tests/collects samples, administers medication and intravenous therapy, draws blood, and correctly uses phlebotomy methods to preserve patient health and quality of samples.
  • Communicates with other departments to ensure seamless patient flow into and out of the department.
  • Demonstrates competence appropriate to their scope of practice, role, and function in organizing, providing care as ordered, processing, scheduling, coordinating, and following up on patients. Demonstrates competence with pre/post procedure instructions and follow up calls to patients.

Education / Patient, family, community, and self

  • Demonstrates competent assessment of patient and family including an assessment of healthcare literacy and identification of factors within the domains of the City of Hope Quality of Life model, which may impact the patient’s ability to comprehend and internalize patient education. The LVN intervenes to facilitate understanding, address, and minimize or eliminate barriers and to provide patient – centered education which is accessible and meaningful to the patient.
  • The LVN is committed to lifelong learning, and as such, is encouraged to continually pursue education, both formal and informal, to achieve and exceed the minimum expected level of education for the LVN. The LVN is also required by California state law to attend continuing professional education to maintain licensure and City of Hope encourages nurses to pursue all venues of nursing and other intellectual enrichment.

Documentation

  • Uses systems, electronic and other documentation according to standards and organizational policy and procedure to ensure and maintain an accurate record of nursing care.
  • Effectively uses and applies information technology to give and receive information (e.g., email, basic Microsoft Office applications, LMS (learning management systems) access, information on Share point or other web-based applications).
  • The LVN is committed to lifelong learning, and as such, is encouraged to continually pursue education, both formal and informal, to achieve and exceed the minimum expected level of education for the LVN. The LVN is also required by California state law to attend continuing professional education to maintain licensure and City of Hope encourages nurses to pursue all venues of nursing and other intellectual enrichment.
  • Applies good interpersonal and communication process utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills to achieve organizational service goals of customer satisfaction and positive work environment.
  • Displays professional commitment and supports the team by promoting unity and teamwork among co-workers by maintaining a positive attitude and positive working relationships.
  • Internal Contacts: Physicians, Surgery, APPs, Nursing, Laboratory, Registration, Utilization Review Department, ancillary departments.

Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Completion of a licensed vocational nursing program
  • 1-year work experience as an LVN in a medical environment.

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • Current LVN License in the state of California.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association

Preferred education, experience, and skills:

  • Previous experience in oncology, ambulatory or infusion setting
  • Previous experience with set up and assist with minor procedures.
  • Phlebotomy and medication administration withing scope.
  • Basic knowledge of related computer system
  • Function with minimal supervision
  • Maintain high level of productivity
  • Basic knowledge of insurance types/financial classifications preferred
  • Excellent oral/written communication and organizational skills
  • Bilingual preferred
  • Foster and promote a positive and professional image
  • Sensitivity to intercultural relations
