Power - Traffic Signal Technician

Idaho Falls Power/Idaho Falls Fiber is currently looking for a Traffic Signal Technician.  In this position you will maintain the operations of the City’s traffic signal system. This is a journeyman qualified to install, program, update, maintain and repair traffic signals.

A traffic signal technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, programming and/or repair of traffic signal systems including traffic signal cabinets, loop detection systems, and traffic signal electronics;   

Assist with the development of traffic studies and design plans such as for traffic signals, signing, pavement marking, construction sequencing, and traffic control plans;

Responds to reports of malfunctioning signals, lights, and related equipment, troubleshoots and makes repairs;

Be responsible for the maintenance of spare equipment and parts, including inventory management and documentation. Relevant technology includes CCTV systems, dynamic message signs, travel time readers, vehicle detection systems, and fiber optics and wireless systems;

Technician should ensure that traffic signal installation and related activities are conducted in compliance with applicable traffic control device regulations, standards, and specifications.

Locates and marks underground traffic control conductors for utilities, contractors, and other City agencies working in easements and right-of-ways.

Operates power equipment, hand tools, and specialized electrical testing equipment.

Complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations;

Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Perform related duties as assigned.

1. Education and Experience:
  1. Graduation from High School or G.E.D.;

AND

  1. Two (2) years of traffic signal experience is preferred;

OR

  1. An equivalent combination of education and experience

2.  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


Methods, techniques, and tools used in the installation, programming, updating, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, electronic signs, and street lighting to provide a safe and effective pedestrian and traffic flow in the City;

Methods, techniques, and tools used in the maintenance, installation, programming, and repair of traffic control systems and their components including, but not limited to, wiring, conduit, computerized control components, intersection controllers and cabinets, and vehicle and pedestrian detection systems;

Operation of a personal computer and job-related software applications;

Operation of specialized electrical tools, metering, and testing equipment;

Operation of light and medium equipment including, but not limited to, crane and bucket truck;

Operation of power equipment and hand tools;

Thorough knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as related to traffic signalization

3.  Special Qualifications

IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association) technician certification preferred

Must possess a Commercial driver’s license.

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to keyboard or type, handle materials or manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms; operate a motor vehicle or job-related equipment; and work at heights and in confined spaces. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The work environment is a public building and outdoor environment that may include exposure to adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of power tools and equipment. The noise level is generally moderate but with occasional exposure to noisy and/or loud equipment, moving vehicles, heavy equipment, and power systems which subjects the employee to mechanical, electrical, and traffic hazards.

The job is an on-call position, responding to emergency situations. Employees designated as immediate response personnel must live thirty (30) minutes or less from their usual daily work site.
