Senior Officer - Juvenile Detention Center

To ensure the provision of safe, secure custody of youth detained in the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center in a humane environment by providing support to Detention Officers and Detention Officer Supervisors.  This will be implemented to assure the youths’ day-by-day and moment-by-moment physical, emotional and psychological safety. The Senior Officer substitutes for, and must be able to, perform all tasks of the positions in which they provide support.  This support will include assuming responsibility for all aspects of the operation of the facility, when assigned, as well as providing support in carrying out a variety of technical and administrative tasks related to providing safe and secure custody of youth within Marion County Juvenile Detention Center.   This position is a leadership role within the Detention Center.  There are several opportunities for Senior Officers.  *The current positions are for first, second and third shifts*

  1. Functions in an overall supportive role in the facility technically and as a leader. Performs a variety of technical and/or administrative tasks to serve as a support to each security post within the facility.  
  2. Serves as a trusted liaison and role model. Assists in developing an overall atmosphere of care and concern for the safety and security of youth and staff.
  3. Performs the duties of the Detention Officer Supervisor as assigned when required.
  4. Performs all tasks of a Detention Officer, including: hallway coverage, visitation, unit coverage, staff breaks, central control, reception, lock-up and Receiving/Screening/Release duties as assigned.
  5. Reviews, reports and corrects situations which may be detrimental to the safety and security of youth or staff, or to the integrity of the secure perimeter of the facility. Schedules periodic contraband searches.
  6. Ensures implementation of approved facility practices, including supervision of the Behavior Management System (BMS), compliance with sanitation practices and training.
  7. Reviews all youth disciplinary actions to ensure their compliance with the Behavior Management System; arbitrates complaints from youth concerning discipline/sanctions; and serves as a neutral third party. 
  8. Communicates all policy or procedural infractions by staff or youth. Communication will include completing necessary reports and forwarding documents to the Detention Officer Supervisor.  Policy or procedural infractions include, but are not limited to: supply deficits; errors in processes; malfunctioning equipment; and concerns regarding vendors or contractual entities.
  9. Investigates and completes written reports as outlined in departmental procedures. Reporting all incidents involving: the use of confinement; attempted or actual escapes; use of force; property damage; special needs room; suicide attempts; and any other unusual incidents as defined by the Juvenile Detention Center and its’ accrediting affiliates. 
  10. Other duties as assigned.

High School Diploma or equivalent is required.  Two years of experience in a direct service role in detention facilities, shelter care facilities, corrections or other human service programs is strongly preferred.  Good knowledge base of the child welfare and juvenile justice system is preferred.  This is a leadership role within the Detention Center, therefore prior leadership experience is preferred.  Must demonstrate the ability to professionally collaborate with others, implement critical thinking skills, promote a positive working environment and operate with the highest level of confidentiality.  Strong verbal and written communication skills are required, as well as proven computer skills.  This position requires the ability to maintain strong boundaries with co-workers so that integrity and trust are not compromised.   These boundaries include social media, social situations and during work time.

Salary for this position is based on applicable, relevant experience. These opportunities are for first, second and third shifts, with shift differentials applicable for second and third shifts.  

We also offer salary enhancements for education (Associate's or Bachelor's degree) and proven bi-lingual skills (Spanish and Burmese most needed).

The Juvenile Detention Center operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
