General Nature of Work

Under the general supervision of the Camp Director and Recreation Programs Coordinator, Camp Counselor will assist with the planning, organization, supervision and implementation of a daily activity schedule for up to 150 elementary school aged children.

Job Responsibilities

  • Acting as a positive role model/mentor to participants and volunteer counselors in training
  • Developing and leading daily activities with campers ranging from indoor and outdoor games, sports, fitness activities, arts and crafts that relate to the theme of the week
  • Eating lunch and snack with campers
  • Providing positive and thorough interaction between parents and staff
  • Communicating regularly with other Camp Counselors, Camp Director, Recreation Programs Coordinator and Parks & Recreation staff to ensure camp runs smoothly and efficiently
  • Overseeing the enforcement of camp rules at all times
  • Completing accurate accidents, behavior and/or discipline reports
  • Rendering first aid in cases of minor injuries
  • Assisting with light-duty cleaning, and the setup and breakdown of tables and chairs
  • Performing miscellaneous tasks as directed

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicant must be 16 years of age or older.
  • At least one (1) year of paid or volunteer experience recreational camp setting, afterschool setting, daycare facility, or related activity is preferred.
  • Applicant must have the ability to work as a team member and coordinate with other staff in contributing to the goals of the program.
  • Applicant must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Applicant must have exceptional communication skills.
  • Applicant must be able to interpret policies and procedures.
  • Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of this role, with or without an accommodation.
  • Applicant must provide their own transportation.
  • Applicant must be willing to work a flexible daytime schedule, Monday through Friday, from May 30 through July 28. We will not have camp July 3- 7.
  • Applicant must be able to attend mandatory Camp Staff orientation/training sessions scheduled Saturday, May 20 8:00am to 5:00pm
  • Regular and consistent attendance is required.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Applicant must clear a criminal background check.
  • Applicant must pass a mandatory drug test.
  • Hired applicants must possess or be willing to quire the following certifications: a valid certificate of course completion for First Aid training that includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Children and Infant, first aid, and AED. This training must be from the American Red Cross, Heartsaver, or American Heart Association.
  • Hired applicants must provide official verification as to identity and work authorization.

ADA Requirements: Individuals applying for the posted position must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Physical Requirements: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).

Work Environment: Essential functions are regularly performed inside/outside with exposure to the elements.
