To perform skilled work in the driving and operation of waste collection vehicles with hoist mechanism used to pick up large containers.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
Drive a waste collection vehicle equipped with hoist mechanism for picking up large containers (20, 30, and 40 cubic yards). Picks up container from customer, drives truck to transfer station to dispose of refuse in designated areas as directed by facility personnel; and either returns the container to stock or to customer as requested; completes special collections as assigned;
Prepares Pre-Trip and Post-Trip vehicle inspection reports according to the division’s policies; checking fluid levels and operating condition of assigned truck. Reports any malfunctions or repair work needed to Supervisor. Performs operator level preventive maintenance; to include daily cleaning, on assigned vehicle and equipment.
Operates the waste collection vehicle in high risk traffic conditions; remains alert to surrounding environment and potential safety hazards; collects waste in a safe manner, assuring the safety of the general public and reports un-collectible or hazardous materials to the supervisor.
Performs waste screening at the curb or pickup point and reports uncollectable or hazardous materials to the supervisor; maintains radio or other communications with the supervisor and/or office.
Assists in enforcement by "tagging" customers for non-conformance to standards according to the City’s and department's policies and procedures; gives an information or warning tag for non-conformance to standard; responds to complaints and inquiries from commercial customers within scope of authority; explains actions to supervisor.
Adheres to safety precautions and regulations related to the operation of equipment; complies with all City and departmental safety rules, policies, and procedures; uses and wears personal protective equipment and clothing, and complies with safe working controls; reports all accidents or injuries to the supervisor immediately; completes reports as required; trains and instructs others on the proper operation of the collection vehicle and equipment.
Effectively works together to meet the needs of the community and City through superior customer service, commitment and integrity; Serves as backup to the Commercial Equipment Operator (Front loader).
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations; and complies with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Must have a valid Texas CDL (Class B) License.

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including vehicle equipped with hoist mechanism for picking up large containers; vehicle equipped with mechanical forks, trash compactor, common hand tools, air jack and safety equipment.
