The La Crosse Municipal Transit Utility is currently accepting applications for the full-time position of SERVICE WORKER.  The purpose of this position is to clean and service Municipal Transit Utility buses, clean the Transit and Municipal Service Centers, perform routine building and grounds maintenance, manual labor, operate light equipment such as floor cleaning machines, mowers and trimmers, perform various clerical functions, and operate buses including the Safe-Ride bus. Position requires a professional demeanor and excellent human relation skills to serve the public.   Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required and ability to obtain and maintain applicable Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with airbrakes and passenger endorsement and a good driving record.  
 
2025 starting rate for this unionized position in $22.49 per hour.  Position will include day, evening, weekend and holiday hours.  The City of La Crosse offers a comprehensive benefit package including medical benefit plan, Wisconsin Retirement Plan, deferred compensation, payroll Roth, life insurance, income continuation insurance, voluntary dental and vision plan, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave.

The purpose of positions in this classification is to clean and service the Municipal Transit Utility buses and clean the Transit Center and the Municipal Service Center.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics
 
Incumbents clean and service the Municipal Transit Utility buses, Bus Storage Area and Wash Bay, Transit Center and Municipal Service Center, perform routine building and grounds maintenance, manual labor and operates light equipment such as floor cleaning machines, mowers and trimmers, perform various clerical functions, and operate buses including the Safe-Ride bus. Position requires a professional demeanor and excellent human relation skills to serve the public. The work is performed under the general direction of the Transit Manager and Transit Supervisors.
 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 
The following duties are normal for this classification.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.   Other duties may be required and assigned.
 
Fuels buses and service trucks, vans and other transit vehicles.
 
Cleans interior and exterior of buses, service trucks, vans and other transit vehicles, via bus wash and hand cleaning.
 
Performs minor repair functions, such as replacing burned out lights, tightening mirrors, screws and bolts as needed.
 
Performs janitorial duties in bus wash, bus storage area, Transit Center and Municipal Service Center.
 
Sweeps, mops, strips and waxes floors. Vacuums and shampoos carpets.
 
Scours restroom fixtures and drinking fountains. Washes windows and mirrors.
 
Empties trash containers. Picks up litter.
 
Plows snow from Transit Center bus stops, walkways and entrances.
 
Performs routine building maintenance tasks.
 
Assists in minor plumbing and electrical repairs.
 
May responds to building emergency calls on occasion.
 
Pick-up/deliver mail to and from City Hall.
 
Maintains regular and predictable on-site attendance.
 
Maintains Bus Wash.
 
Checks fluid and oil levels; adds fluid when necessary.
 
Replaces buses in service when necessary.
 
Secures facilities at end of day.
 
Changes bus vaults and records daily readings.  
 
Operates Safe-Ride bus.  May also operate buses in regular route service as needed.
 
Drives buses around shop and garage area.
 
Assist wheelchair bound passengers in situations where bus ramp is inoperable.
 
Place and pick-up temporary bus stop signs as needed.
 
Removes snow and salts around bus shelters, bus stops and bus storage area.
 
Must be able to work alone.
 
Must be able to report to work promptly and on a regular basis.
 
Must be able to take direction and work well with others.
 
 
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities
 
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this classification and may also be performed by other unit members.
 
Obtains change coins from bank.
 
Purchases tokens and takes fare box vaults to City Treasurer’s office.
 
Maintains bus shelters – washes windows, sweeps, picks up trash and broken glass panels as needed.
 
Assist maintenance shop with miscellaneous minor repairs, loading spare tires, etc.
 
Picks up and delivers interdepartmental mail.
 
 
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
 
High school diploma or equivalent.  Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.  Must possess a Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) permit upon hire, and must be able to obtain commercial driver’s license with passenger endorsement within 14 days on the job.  Must be able to maintain CDL for employment.  Must be able to maintain a good driving record.  Knowledge of working hazards and safety practices. Knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving techniques.

Ability to read and understand bus schedules, street maps and directions.
 
Ability to effectively communicate through the use of two-way communication devices.

Physical Requirements
 
Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as City buses, motor vehicle, fuel pumps, snow removal equipment and bus wash station.  
 
Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as minor repairs and adjustments, and operating transit utility equipment and vehicles.
 
Ability to exert heavy physical effort involving some combination of lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, pushing and pulling.  Must be able to occasionally lift up to 40 pounds, and push/pull weight of manual wheelchair bound passenger.
 
Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds and odors associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
 
Ability to safely operate a large vehicle in traffic and close quarters.
 
Ability to maintain correct operating speeds with the safety and speed regulations in conforming with time constraints.
 
Environmental Adaptability
 
Ability to work under conditions which require exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, loud sounds, odors, toxic agents, machinery, traffic hazards, wetness and/or dust.  This exposure may cause some discomfort and presents a risk of injury.
