What are the responsibilities and job description for the Service Technician position at City of Lakeville?
The City of Lakeville is accepting applications for a service technician. Perform skilled mechanical services including, but not limited to, automobiles, squad cars, light equipment, and other city-owned vehicles and equipment. This position is subject to extended work days, call backs and shift schedules as required for the City's maintenance operations.
2023 salary range is $29.39 - 36.65 per hour plus $1.54 per hour for service technician license or certification.
- Provides skilled mechanical major overhauls, repairs and maintenance of all trucks and heavy duty construction equipment and diesel equipment.
- Diagnoses mechanical problems and recommends repair or replacement of parts. Overhauls and/or rebuilds gas and diesel engines as directed.
- Performs preventive and routine maintenance on all city vehicles
- Prepares in a complete and accurate manner an appropriate repair order form for each job assigned.
- Performs snow removal and ice control operations using trucks, graders, loaders and other specialized pieces of equipment as required.
- Adheres to and implements all safety rules, regulations and practices including wearing appropriate safety equipment as necessary to protect the employee, the operation and the public.
- Promotes and maintains good relations between co-workers, supervisors and the general public.
- Performs other maintenance tasks and assists other maintenance divisions, as assigned, including emergency situations or to balance seasonal workloads and schedules.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force;
- Work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing;
- Work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;
- Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound;
- Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;
- Work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, working with explosives and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment;
- Work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Advanced training from an accredited vocational school in automotive, electronics, or heavy equipment.
- Three to five years experience working as a mechanic required.
- Possession of a valid Minnesota Class B driver's license, air brake endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Knowledge of truck and heavy equipment operation.
- DOT Inspector License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- A.S.E. Master certification as a mechanic preferred.
- Experience working for a municipality as a mechanic desired.
