Primary Function
Operates and performs preventive maintenance on heavy motor equipment.
Principle Duties & Responsibilities
Follows safe practices in the performance of duties.
Operates a tank truck flusher.
Operates small and medium size backhoes, trackhoes, rubber tire front end loaders, track loaders, forklifts, and other related construction or heavy motorized equipment in a variety of public work projects.
Operates road rollers in street reconstruction projects.
Operates a paving machine in placing various courses of asphalt in the reconstruction and maintenance of streets.
Operates a snow loader when removing heavy snow accumulations.
Operates a dump truck with or without plow in excess of 26,000 G.V.W. in the control and removal of snow.
Performs routine maintenance on motorized equipment as required.
May oversee and assist a small group of laborers and operators in loading an unloading trucks, patching streets and other manual laboring tasks as required.
Operates a truck mounted snowplow and drives a dump truck with a trailer.
Performs manual labor involving loading and unloading trucks, digging of ditches, felling and trimming of trees, cutting brush, and similar tasks.
Operates a rubber tire loader in general maintenance work and snow removal operations.
Uses a jackhammer and other power-driven equipment.
Performs responsibilities of Equipment Operator 1 as required by management for business operation needs.
Bureau of Sewer Collections and Water T&D Operates and maintains a Vactor truck for system maintenance and repair, including but not limited to, hydro-excavation OR for cleaning and maintaining components of Wastewater Collection system.
Bureau of Streets Operates a Street Sweeper and performs responsibilities of Sweeper Operator as required by management for business operation needs.

Knowledge of safe practices related to Public Works.
Ability to operate a vehicle on private and public streets is required.
Skill in the use of hand tools, power and motorized equipment.

Education, Training and Experience
Graduation from High School or completion of a GED is required.
A minimum of two (2) years documented on-the-job experience in operating heavy motor equipment on a regular basis is required.
A minimum of one (1) year documented experience in making mechanical repairs and adjustments and servicing heavy motor equipment is required.
Bureau of Streets Snow removal experience required, including plowing of public roadways and alleys. Paving experience required, including the operation of all related paving equipment.
Licenses, Certificates, and Additional Information Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is required. Class A commercial driver’s license is preferred. Tanker endorsement and/or ability to obtain the tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire. Must be trained and certified in trench and excavation safety, and be able to be trained as a Competent Person within 60 days of hire

Indoors, environmentally controlled.
Outdoor, exposed to inclement weather and extreme temperature.
Exposure to noise, pollution.
Safety Equipment Used or Needed
Personal Protective Equipment such as hardhats, gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, rain gear, steel toed safety shoes, rain boots and respirators.

Knowledge, skills and/or abilities assessment tests may be conducted as part of the position screening process.
Requires working long hours, overtime and set-schedule shifts (AM OR PM) as necessary to conduct business operations.
Must be available to handle emergency situations (weather or other as declared) after hours, weekends and holidays.
