What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Maintenance position at City of Leander?
Utilizes physical labor to assist in water and wastewater repairs, replacement, excavation, meter installation and taps. Operates equipment associated with maintenance and construction of water and sewer main projects. Maintains and operates the City’s wastewater treatment plant system in a safe, effective and efficient manner, using technical expertise that follows generally accepted practices and procedures. Worker must be able to be scheduled for “on-call” rotation. This position is subject to “DOT random drug testing”.
Work Schedule:
4/9 hour days, Monday through Thursday, and 4 hours on Friday
M-Th 6:30 am - 4:00 pm (30 minute lunch) and Fridays 6:30am - 10:30am
- Repairs water and wastewater mains; cleans and prepares pipe for repairs; installs repair parts and evaluate effectiveness of repair.
- Installs wastewater taps, water taps and meters; prepares pipes and fittings, tab main by hand or machine and install service to property line.
- Assists in excavation: operates air hammer to break rock and asphalt; uses pick and shovel to remove dirt and rock from hole, uses probe to locate pipe.
- Cleans wastewater lines; uses hand and/or machine rods to unclog or clean main.
- Installs fire hydrants, valves, manholes and clean outs.
- Cleans, and maintains tools and equipment. Loads and unloads trucks.
- Subject to after-hours call out for emergency situations including on call rotation and special events.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
- High School Graduation or G.E.D.
Required Certificates and Licenses:
- Valid Texas Class B CDL or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of the hire date.
- Basic first aid certificate or the ability to obtain one within 9 months of the hire date.
- No certifications required at the time of employment but must obtain a TCEQ Class “I” Collection License and/or a TCEQ “D” Water License within 9 months of hire date.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certifications, and Licenses:
- Associate’s degree (A.A./A.S.)
- One or more years related experience.
- Follow detailed verbal and written instruction.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate with other employees and the general public in a courteous and diplomatic manner.
- Work irregular schedules with overtime, frequent change of tasks.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Possess basic knowledge in the operation and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, heavy (vehicular) construction equipment, pumps and equipment used in and around water and wastewater systems. Possess familiarity with hand and power tools and equipment commonly used in the maintenance of vehicles, equipment, structures and buildings.
- Wear steel-toed leather boots, steel-toed rubber boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 150 pounds.
