The Long Beach Police Department is accepting applications for non-career Police Investigators. This position is a non-sworn, at-will, part-time position that is utilized throughout the Police Department. Current vacancies are within the Executive Bureau's Internal Affairs Division.
The Long Beach Police Department is the second largest municipal police agency in Los Angeles County and provides law enforcement services to the 7th largest city in the State of California. LBPD is dedicated to professional, proactive and innovative policing and is committed to building and maintaining positive relationships with the diverse community they serve.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

This position will:

  • Report to the Internal Affairs Commander and conducts interviews of employees of the Police Department.
  • Conducts a variety of investigations including administrative investigations.
  • Conducts comprehensive interviews with applications/employees.
  • Prepare thorough and objective reports.
  • Analyzes and reviews public records, such as law enforcement reports and educational transcripts of individuals; contacts other agencies, departments and organizations to obtain and confirm information as necessary.
  • Collect and analyze data regarding an employee's Internal Affairs history and Early Intervention Program (EIPro) purview to identify any early warning signs and any areas of improvement.
  • Compile data and statistics of identified employees.
  • Collaborate with other department sections to develop employee risk management strategies.
  • Review use of force incidents and K9 utilization incidents to verify if disclosable under Senate Bill 1421 (SB1421) and Assembly Bill 71 (AB71).
  • Review and process outside agency requests for body worn camera footage and other department documents.
  • Work with confidential personnel issues in a professional manner.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Five (5) years of experience as a peace officer.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software programs, including Word and Excel.
  • Valid California Driver's license is required and must be maintained through the course of employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work with staff and management at all levels of the Department and City.
  • Self-motivated with excellent customer service skills and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Possession of a California POST Background Investigator Core Course Certificate is desirable.
  • Experience in background investigations for employment, internal affairs investigations, in-depth investigations of criminal matters or comprehensive investigations of traffic-related incidents is desired.
