Plan, prepare, & teach effective & safe ARC swim lessons. ARC swim lessons will include the six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics, the two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics, & Adult swim classes. Swim instructor must be able to perform all related duties as assigned including, but not limited to:
- Enforcing water safety rules and regulations.
- Supervise & ensure the safety of class participants during program.
- Explain & demonstrate proper swimming techniques.
- Teach & encourage participants in the acquisition of new aquatics skills & swimming strokes.
- Observe swimming, headfirst entry and diving skills and accurately classify them and suggest appropriate interventions to improve them.
- Modify teaching to meet unexpected challenges.
- Demonstrate the ability to accommodate participants with disabilities and other health conditions.
- Evaluation of participant skill levels.
- Report and document course participant progress.
- Complete and submit ARC paperwork.
- Work is performed under the supervision of the Pool Manager and/or Head Lifeguard.

- Adheres to Lynchburg City Parks and Recreation Department policies and procedures.
- Provides a safe swimming environment for all participants while enforcing all pool rules and regulations.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of aquatic safety principles, rules, regulations, and emergency action plans with the ability to perform them.
- Demonstrates good public relations when dealing with patrons, the general public and other city employees.
- Reports any problems, potential situations, and/or disturbances immediately to the supervisor on duty.
- Greets customers in a friendly and inviting manner; Answer inquiries or concerns related to aquatic programs, operational hours, and general questions through use of telephone or in person.
- Be punctual and prepared to begin work as scheduled.
- Must be capable of teaching in a group setting, where participants will have varying comfort levels & aquatics skills when in the water.
- Supports aquatics staff during emergency situations and assist other personnel when requested.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

Work environmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely exposed to outside weather conditions and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to pool chemicals.

- Must have a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification
- Must have current CPR & First Aid certifications. ARC lifeguarding certification is highly beneficial, but not required.
- Prior experience as a competitive swimmer & or swim team coach is preferred.
- Requires regular and consistent attendance.
- Must enjoy working with children.
- Some knowledge of Lynchburg Parks & Recreation facilities and our surrounding area.
- Must be willing to complete any additional task as assigned by a supervisor/manager.
