CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: TRANSFORMER MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN/ U.M.T.

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s electric equipment. This classification will work in conjunction with transformer maintenance technician on transformer maintenance program with the Light Distribution Department and with the utility maintenance technician,sr. in the department metering program as well as helps oversee meter readers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Performs preventive maintenance duties on equipment; cleans and properly stores tools and equipment after use.

Directs traffic at work site.

Assists line crews as needed.

Runs errands as requested.

Responds to emergency calls.

Operates computer, testing devices, meter reading device, electric meters, voltage meter, copier, pager, radio, truck, calculator, forklift, hand tools, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Works with officials, contractors, and the general public.

Trains others on job requirements, codes, and regulations.

Deals with environmental issues; trains and studies on environmental compliance.

Directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processes employee concerns and problems, directing work.

Oversees Meter Readers and directs their duties.

Assists in the construction and/or repair of lines; repairs or replaces meters.

Makes service connections on water and/or electric lines.

Provides customer service; assists customers as needed.

Reads meters; tests meters; changes out meters; maintains knowledge of meter locations; determines if meters are dead.

Connects and disconnects services.

Reads utility demand meters; rereads electric meters.

Checks and maintains transformers; tightens/replaces bushings; pulls and tests oil samples.

Files records of samples and incoming and outgoing transformers.

Cleans and paints transformers; cleans up oil spills and hazardous wastes.

Loads, unloads, and moves transformers.

Installs and maintains electrical systems; wires or rewires City buildings.

Maintains and repairs electrical equipment.

Replaces light bulbs and ballasts; lays conduit and pulls wire.

Monitors electrical substation for ampage, operations, lights, and meters.

Reads meters; cleans and tests meters; changes out and install meters; disassembles meters; installs meter locking devices; troubleshoots meters in the field; installs surge arrestors.

Delivers power outage notices.

Assists on mapping.

Maintains inventory of spare parts; assists with inventory control; picks up parts from local supply house; unloads trucks and puts stock on shelves.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by technical training in environmental issues, transformer basics; one year of experience in utility maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky driver’s license. May require the possession and maintenance of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and appropriate endorsements.

Includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well established policies, procedures and standards.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature extremes, machinery, electric currents, or traffic hazards.
