RECREATION LEADER - Youth Center
DEFINITION
To lead recreation programs and provide information and assistance to participants, to answer the telephone and receive calls, to perform a variety of office and accounting duties, to open and close city faculties and engage in general facility clean-up as needed. Reports to the Department Director.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general direction from the Recreation and Cultural Services Director. Provides direct and indirect supervision of Recreation Instructors.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Deals tactfully and courteously with the public and other City employees by establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships. Provides information and assistance to individuals inquiring about departmental policies and programs.
- Provides recreation and maintenance support to department head in general areas of playgrounds, buildings and rentals and youth center, and assists in special events (i.e. 5
Milers, Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas Party, Bicycle Rodeo, field trips, etc)
- Plans, creates and distributes activity calendars, flyers and brochures; assumes responsibility for collecting and tabulating monthly attendance; distributes payroll time cards and complies with payroll deadlines at all facilities and with all department personnel as well as maintaining a personal weekly disposition time sheet.
- Opens, closes, inspects and cleans the building rentals as necessary.
- Substitutes at all facilities as needed and is responsible for coordinating substitutions; facilitates and coordinates youth center activities and general sports and recreation development.
- Gathers and assembles materials and supplies for recreation activities.
- Turns lights on and off at ball field; assists or does field preparation and parts maintenance.
- Performs a variety of office, accounting and recreation assignments, including typing, proofreading, filing and recording and checking information on records; answers the telephone and waits on the public, scheduling appointments and giving information and assistance as required; operates office equipment and files documents and records according to predetermined classifications; maintains alphabetical index and cross- references files; and prepares and distributes forms.
- Performs related work as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of and Ability to: The following generally describes the knowledge and abilities required to enter the job and/or to be learned within a defined short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
- Knowledge of:
- Operation, procedures, policies and precedents of the office and department where assigned; correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; mathematics; telephone and receptionist techniques; indexing, filing and record keeping methods and procedures; modem office methods, practices and procedures.
- Supervision of recreation instructors leading activities and participants,
- Organizing and implementing recreation programs.
Ability to:
- Perform a variety of office, accounting and recreation work involving use of independent judgment and requiring accuracy and speed.
- Interpret, apply and explain the procedures, precedents and policies of the department to which assigned.
- Type at a speed of no less than 30 words per minute from clear, legible copy.
- Use good judgment in choosing among alternatives to solve work problems; recognize scope of authority and refer some problems to others.
- Deal tactfully and courteously with the public and other city employees.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Stand, bend, sit, kneel, reach and move about safely in city business office work locations.
- Pick up, manipulate, move, raise and lower small business office equipment, materials and supplies and work products weighing 30 lbs. or less; and to use approved stepping stools/ladders to reach heights between 6’0” and 7’6”.
- Read handwritten, typed or machine generated text, graphical and statistical material without aides other than eyeglasses and/or contacts.
- Absorb data, learn and apply procedures required to perform the full range of analytic tasks required by typical duties of the class.
Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: Two(2) years of work experience supervising and managing recreation programs

License or Certificate:
- Possession of a valid California state driver’s license and Class II license issued by the state Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Current CPR Certificate.
- Current Food and Safety Certificate
- American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate preferred
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Late night or weekend field trips or building closures, cleaning and inspections. Ability to officiate a variety of weekend or late-night sports events as required.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Requires use of a personal computer and related software programs, calculator, telephone copy machine and fax machine.

Attend evening meetings and functions as required. Travel out of the City to attend meetings.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work in an office environment or in any building or structure within the service area. Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to inclement weather, exposure to noise, dust, grease fumes, gases and potentially hazardous chemicals. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
