General Purpose:

The purpose of the position is to provide support to the Municipal Court by serving, collecting, and clearing outstanding Class “C” misdemeanor warrants and providing security in the Courtroom during court proceedings. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with the standardized training methods set forth by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.  Work is accomplished through work assigned by the Municipal Court, Assistant Chief of Police and Police supervisors.  These assignments are performed with competent, professional work ethics which require the ability to make rational, sound decisions.  These decisions require the ability to listen closely, to discern appropriate facts, remember them, write them down in an effective manner, then act accordingly.  

Reporting Relationships:

Supervision received: The Warrant Officer works under the direction of the Administrative Sergeant or the Assistant Chief’s Designee.

None

Essential Duties:

  • Serving and clearing of outstanding class “C” municipal warrants;
  • Perform duties for online, Court approved payments and in-person warrant collections
  • Prepares and maintains up-to date warrant lists and tracks daily warrant service activities;
  • Serves warrants by phone contacts, mail contacts, field contacts, and then physical arrest if necessary;
  • Maintaining accurate records and keeps city materials, reports and documents confidential as provided by policy and law;
  • Providing security in the courtroom during court proceedings, establish decorum in the court facilities, screen visitors for weapons and contraband as appropriate, and escort defendants to and from the court room;
  • Assist the Judge and court staff during all court proceedings, serving as the primary Bailiff;
  • Prepare paperwork, work with Municipal Court on notices and media releases for the annual warrant roundup program;
  • Attend meetings with other cities and counties involved with the warrant roundup program as approved;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

  1. Education and Experience
    1. High School Diploma or GED

AND

    1. Graduation from a recognized police academy; TCOLE Certified; Basic Peace Officer’s License, plus a minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a law enforcement officer.

       OR

    1. An equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered under appropriate conditions.
  1. Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License
  2. Must be able to pass a background check and drug test

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:  Warrant Service; City Ordinances; Police Communications; Follow the policies and procedures of the City of Melissa and the City of Melissa Police Department; Must have knowledge of laws of arrests, Texas Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedures; All other subordinate levels of law enforcement duties, responsibilities and procedures; and Use and care of vehicles, firearms, and specialized equipment.

Skills/Ability to:  Perform assigned duties; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, law enforcement agencies, judicial officials and general public; understand and follow written and oral instruction, departmental policy, rules, regulations and laws; analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective and reasonable course of action; communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; operate and maintain a number of office machines and equipment such as PC’s, copier, fax machine, calculator, etc.; tolerate outside working conditions; maintain appropriate necessary certifications and licenses applicable to job responsibilities, including a valid Texas driver’s license; must pass and maintain all physical activities and requirements of the City of Melissa.
