ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Processing Supervisor at the wastewater treatment facilities in the Public Works Division. Assists in the daily operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant including the laboratory and maintenance department in compliance with established procedures, standards, federal and state laws, and administrative regulations. Learns, performs, and assists in the monitoring of the wastewater treatment plan operation and adjustments of pumps, valves, and related mechanical equipment. Conducts and assists with collection of wastewater samples, field and lab tests, and quality assurance tests. Adjusts chemicals and/or equipment as necessary. Performs preventive maintenance inspection of plant and equipment as needed. Monitors and records meter readings of equipment and machinery as needed. Makes and assists in minor repairs and/or adjustments on plant and equipment with assistance. Forwards all requests for major repairs and/or adjustments on equipment and tools to management and trainer. Prepares and assists in the preparation and maintenance of accurate reports and records. Performs and assists with ground maintenance and cleaning. Notifies management directly, verbally or in writing, of critical problems and emergency situations. Exercises some degree of independence in adjusting and modifying minor process operations.

1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.


The duration of employment for applicants selected for the Wastewater Treatment Trainee Program is 36 months as a Trainee. During this time, Trainees will receive training and be responsible for satisfactorily progressing through the program ultimately resulting in certification as a State of Tennessee Class IV Wastewater Operator. Also during this time, Trainees will have the opportunity to apply and compete for available City Wastewater Treatment Operator positions.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to read meters and gages. Must make visual inspections of process and detect any unusual characteristics. Requires traversing on uneven ground and the ability to climb ladders and stairs. Requires lifting (approx. 50 lbs.), pulling, reaching, stooping, stretching, balancing and crouching. Requires the ability to operate an automobile and various general office equipment such as computer, copier, and telephone.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Twenty-four hour, seven-day-week operation, involves shift work assignments. Majority of work is performed in a control room environment and outside of the facilities. Makes routine inspections of facility, collects samples and performs field test. May be exposed to dust, fumes, odors, noise, heat and all types of extreme weather conditions. Requires the ability to work any assigned shift.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent certification or training in wastewater operation; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Chemistry or related field preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid driver license as a condition of continued employment. Must successfully complete job related skills testing as designated by Human Resources such as problem solving skills, mathematics/computation ability and knowledge of chemistry, bacteriology and wastewater treatment.

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee House Bill 105, "first responder means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel and dispatchers of law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service departments."
