What are the responsibilities and job description for the Control Room Operator position at City of Miami Beach?
This is responsible, advanced semi-skilled technical work in the monitoring, operation, routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor repair of water and sewer pumping and control equipment, installations, and facilities in the City's Public Works Department. Work includes primarily control room and some field duties. Emphasis of work is the monitoring and adjusting of pressures and flows through the operation of manual and electrical controls, maintenance of equipment and facilities, and minor or emergency repairs, generally in a control facility or individual pumping station.
Operates manual, electrical, and computerized controls of various pumping stations from a central control console or individual stations
Monitors water pressure and flow throughout the City by reading meters and charts
Monitors the performance of the City's sewer system
Changes daily meter charts
Provides adequate pressure and flow by starting, stopping, and regulating pumps at various locations
Fills reservoirs and maintains levels
Performs water turn-ons and turn-offs as directed
Receives, logs, and processes citizen complaints
Investigates and evaluates indications and complaints of water and sewer line stoppages, leaks, and breaks; pump station and system malfunctions and failures; and other interruptions of service; and takes appropriate action
Assesses the need for maintenance and repair of various components of the systems and facilities; calls in emergency repair crews when appropriate
Conducts regular inspections of equipment and structures and reports on conditions and performance
Conducts routine maintenance, including, but not limited to, lubricating, cleaning, and adjusting all types of pumping related equipment
Cleans, polishes, paints, and maintains pumping equipment, stations, and related facilities; performs minor or emergency repairs
Prepares and maintains detailed records and reports
Participates in the installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, cleaning, and general care of all water and sewer pumping equipment, stations, control facilities, and related equipment and facilities
Transports pumps, motors, other equipment, and crews
Performs related work as required
Six (6) months full-time experience in the operation and troubleshooting of a telemetry controlled heavy duty pumping facility including some repair work
Six (6) months full-time paid public contact experience
Driver's license
Shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays
Physical Requirements:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact
Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, word processor, calculator, copier, and fax machine
Continuous walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling
Ability to lift heavy objects
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, coworkers, the press the general public and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation, gender identity or sexual orientation.
- Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of all city ethics and conflicts of interest policies. Strong understanding of ethical behavior is required.
