This is advanced professional and technical work enforcing the City of Miami’s Zoning Code, sign ordinance and other related regulations, laws, statutes, and ordinances.
An employee in the classification performs evaluation work involving the application of skilled technical knowledge and judgment in examining plans, and other specifications while interacting directly with the public. Work is performed with considerable independence and initiative within established codes, regulations, ordinances and technical guidelines. This position is supervised by a higher-level Manager.

Examines large and complex projects plans.
Interprets and enforces all applicable zoning codes, ordinances, and other related laws.
Reviews plans and provides project representatives with reasons explaining the deficiencies.
Calculates all applicable fees for project and informs project representative in writing.
Reviews and advises project representative of preliminary permitting information such as: permits, zones, hearing processes, and all other zoning issues needed for projects to be completed and suggests changes to existing information.
Reviews and analyzes legal descriptions of proposed projects against zoning maps, plats, and other resources utilizing appropriate software.
Assist with making recommendations in changing ordinances and regulations relative to the Zoning Ordinance and other City Codes.
Researches all board's or committees cases and prepares written and recommendation for appropriate action.
Attends Board, Committee and City Commission meetings representing the Office of Zoning when necessary.
Assists with developing and implementing zoning procedures and policies in order to improve office efficiency.
Conducts field investigations to assure projects are within compliance of zoning regulations and applicable permits.
Assists other staff members with interpreting and implementing the zoning code of other City Codes, and other relevant statutes, ordinances, regulations, rules, and laws.
May serve as a supervisor when necessary.
Performs other related work as required.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Urban Planning, or Public Administration and two (2) years experience in architecture, urban planning, or landscape design work or zoning code research and plans review.
OR
Equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of the required experience.

- Proof of education in the form of Bachelor's degree or higher in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Planning or Public Administration. If degree/diploma does not reflect the academic major on its face, transcripts must be submitted. If submitting transcripts, submitted transcripts must include the following: student's name, school name, number of credits, degree completion, and major. Foreign diplomas/degrees must be submitted with a credential evaluation report from an approved credential evaluation agency*. Translations of diploma/degrees are not accepted. Audit/Academic reports are not accepted as substitutions for college transcripts.
- To qualify under the equivalency clause, applicant must provide proof of education in one or more of the following applicable forms: high school diploma, transcript showing at least 60 college credits, Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree or higher.
Credential evaluation reports showing the United States equivalency for academic credentials earned in other countries may be provided by:
- An accredited four-year college or university in the United States, OR
- A current member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), OR
- A current member of the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE), OR
- A recognized Professional Organization

Selection Preference for City Residents: In accordance with APM 2-02, applicants for classified positions who are City of Miami residents and new hires will receive preference in selection from interview ranking bands provided that any two (2) of the following documents are submitted with the employment application and again at time of interview:

B. Valid Florida Driver License or State-issued I.D.
C. Property Tax Statement dated within 1 year of the date of submission
D. Properly executed valid lease agreement
