Monona Parks & Recreation offers a full-day summer day camp for pre-k-aged children. The Camp Counselor works to oversee the group areas and the program activities. The position entails spending time with camper groups, ensuring that they bond and create lasting memories and friendships. Further duties include activity supervision, behavioral management, counselor in training (CIT) program leadership, first aid response, and working to create amazing special events for the entire camp community.

This is a seasonal position from June-August, with training beginning in May. Shift hours are Monday-Friday between 8 am-5 pm, 40 hours a week availability preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver a fun program to campers ages 4-6.
  • Ensure that campers know and follow safety and educational procedures during camp programs.
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in all program areas.
  • Responsible for planning daily and weekly activities associated with their specific activity area and small group time
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, daily attendance, and participant information.
  • Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Camp Leadership
  • Help guide Counselors-in-Training to have a deeper understanding of leadership and counseling skills.
  • Ensure activities and groups maintain adequate coverage, subbing as needed.
  • Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
  • Ensure each camper is having a positive experience, making friends and adjusting well to camp.
  • Be responsible for the health, safety, whereabouts, and welfare of campers in general, and specifically campers assigned to your program area and group.
  • Work cooperatively with leadership, counselors and support staff to make the summer program run safely and effectively.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance while supervising all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Provide ongoing program ideas to counseling and activity area staff.
  • Perform other duties as they arise, including taking photographs, liaising with parents, attending field trips, and helping with any organizational work.

Qualifications

  • Must have a desire to work with and inspire children in a summer camp environment.
  • Must be at least 16 years old* as of the start of employment and eligible to work in the United States. *If you are 15 and have completed and passed our CIT Leadership program you're eligible to apply.
  • Must have experience in the development and delivery of programs and activities for a similar population.
  • A valid WI driver's license preferred but not required.
  • Must pass a background check and provide other forms and details.
  • Must have a current certification in First Aid and CPR, at a minimum. These may be obtained onsite during staff training.
  • Other certification, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, etc., earn a $2 raise from standard base pay. Lifeguard certification available through us if desired.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Must be able to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards.
  • Must be able to respond appropriately to situations requiring First Aid and assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
  • Must be able to perform physical aspects of the position, including working long hours in an active camp program environment.
  • Must possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff.
  • Must have familiarity with or the ability to learn a variety of equipment including sports, crafts, and waterfront equipment; office supplies and electronic equipment including a phone, iPad, computer; digital camera; and other equipment as the need arises.
