GENERAL SUMMARY
To perform skilled maintenance work and operate a variety of equipment in the construction, operations, repair, maintenance and upkeep of the City municipal infrastructure, facilities, and grounds
SUPERVISION
General supervision is provided by the ROW Maintenance Supervisor and ROW Foreman
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Adhere and comply with OSHA, TOSHA, and the City of Mt. Juliet safety requirements
- Adhere and comply with the City of Mt. Juliet Policy and Procedures Manual
- Maintain and repair City facilities, equipment, and buildings by performing a variety of general maintenance and mechanical repair work
- Operate a variety of equipment including trucks, air compressors, rollers, concrete mixers, concrete saw, circular saws, jackhammers, electric drills, and other similar equipment and machinery in repairing and installing concrete and various other maintenance needs
- Utilize a variety of hand and power tools; assist in routine maintenance of such equipment; assist with maintenance, collection, and cleaning of tools and materials after utilization; performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment
- Provide support to assist other departmental staff in the completion of other projects as needed
- Operate construction, snow removal, and other equipment such as graders, tandem truck, single axle trucks, backhoe, sand and salt spreader trucks, roller, dozer, and grapple trucks
- Operate a variety of tools such as grass and weed cutting equipment, jackhammers, small power, and carpentry tools
- Act as a flagger when needed to alert traffic and protect the crew when required; sets up and picks up cones after work in the right-of-way
- Works as part of a maintenance crew; cleans streets and right-if-ways of general debris; repair City facilities and grounds as needed
- Cuts grass, trims shrubs, trees and other vegetation along street rights-of-way and City-owned properties as needed
- Performs required labor involved in the construction and maintenance projects as part of the crew, including pavement cutting, patching, ditch digging, crack filling, and working with hot asphalt applications
- Install and remove seasonal decorations as required
- Assist in the inspection and/or repair on streets and drainage systems to ensure that all aspects of the system are functioning
- Participate in a weekly rotation of street sweeping outside of normal business hours
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure the adherence to safe work practices and procedures
- Perform special projects as assigned
- Maintain work time and material records
- Work with other department and city employees as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
High School diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of five years of experience operating heavy machinery or heavy vehicles
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Possession of valid Tennessee driver’s license
CDL license
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Care, operation, and maintenance of a variety of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, operation, construction, or repair activities
- Record keeping of equipment and maintenance records
- Safe work practices
SKILL IN:
Operation of a variety of construction, light duty, and other equipment utilized in various maintenance, operation, and repair activities.
ABILITY TO:
- Operate a computer and related equipment
- Perform heavy, manual tasks for extended periods of time
- Perform semi-skilled building maintenance and repair work
- Observe possible safety hazards and react/correct accordingly
- Operate a variety of power tool and equipment in a safe and effective manner
- Understand and follow oral and written instruction
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Pass a medical physical examination and drug test
- Meet the City’s driving standards
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities that may include the following:
- Walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
- Working in confined spaces
- Bending, squatting, twisting, crawling, kneeling, and climbing frequently in the performance of job duties
- Operate assigned equipment
- Performing manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions
- Transporting hazardous materials
- Pushing, pulling, or lifting equipment or supplies with objects occasionally weighing up to 100 lbs.
- Exposure to raw sewage, electrical hazards, temperature extremes, high workplaces, varying noise levels, toxic materials, air contaminants and temperature and weather extremes
