What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineer-in-Training (Traffic) position at City of Murfreesboro?
This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
Essential Functions:
Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
Assist in signal operations and maintenance consistent with the established goals, objectives, and policies of the City. Establish and maintain a strong familiarity with the general design and function of primary corridors and individual intersections. Maintain or improve traffic flow and safety. Review, evaluate and perform signal timing, phasing, and detection setup using appropriate strategies and resources. Work with advanced transportation management software platforms such as Synchro Analysis, Centracs Traffic Management System, CCTV cameras software systems, and video detection platforms. Conduct field visits and perform signal analysis.
Receive, analyze, and respond to citizen and council requests under the direction of a Professional Engineer. Research, collect, compile, and analyze engineering data and prepare reports, conclusions, and recommendations.
Assist in developing and maintaining records and reports pertaining to traffic operations and maintenance, schedules, and timetables. Work with other City and County Officials on special projects.
Review traffic impact studies, traffic count data, and traffic signal construction plans to meet all City, State, and Federal requirements. Assist in analyzing access driveways, circulation, geometric design, pavement markings, and signage, for submittals from private development and City projects.
Understand and apply the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), City zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, street specifications, and other local, state, and federal land traffic regulations.

Performs other work as assigned.
Physical Demands:
Performs work that involves walking or standing in variable weather conditions and on uneven terrain. Use skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs on repetitive operation of computers or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, traffic engineering, or related engineering field. Knowledge and ability to use Synchro 11, Highway Capacity Software (HCS), Closed Loop Advanced Transportation Management Software (ATMS), Econolite’s Centracs ATMS, Autodesk's AutoCAD, and ArcGIS Online (preferred).
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Fundamentals of Engineering certification (EIT) is required. Will accept applications with Certification as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the State of Tennessee.
Must have valid Driver's License issued by the State of Tennessee.
