The Bureau of Asset Management is responsible for oversight of the investment portfolios of the five New York City pension systems. Through a culture of collaboration, individual development, and teamwork that leverages diverse talent and strives for continuous improvement, the goal of the Bureau of Asset Management is to achieve exceptional investment outcomes for all stakeholders; to deliver outstanding support to plan Trustees; and to serve as a responsible steward of the resources of plan beneficiaries and the City of New York.

The Director of Trustee Relations will work under the direction of the BAM Chief of Staff, who is responsible for overseeing the execution of priority strategic initiatives on behalf of BAM. The Director of Trustee Relations will sit on the BAM Pensions Team, which serves as the primary point of contact for retirement system trustees, managing the systems’ investment meetings.

Responsibilities for the Director of Trustee Relations include, but are not limited to:

  • Strengthen BAM’s trustee service function
  • Develop plans to ensure that BAM meets trustee service needs consistently over time, including by implementing the recommendations from the 2024 STAR Report
  • Identify day-to-day trustee service concerns and facilitate proactive intervention steps
  • Work with all relevant BAM teams to resolve trustee requests quickly and effectively
  • Develop and review monthly materials for trustees including board package cover notes
  • Create trustee service feedback mechanisms and coordinate implementation
  • Recommend and drive process improvements based on trustee service feedback
  • Maintain trustee data
  • Work with the BAM Chief of Staff, Chief Strategy Officer, and other BAM leadership to execute strategic initiatives and special projects in support of stronger trustee relations
  • Coordinate internal and external trustee-related communications for BAM
  • Liaise with other bureaus within the Comptroller’s office on behalf of BAM on trustee-related efforts
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for ongoing cross-team workstreams as well as ad-hoc BAM projects and strategic initiatives

Minimum Qualifications

Internal applicants only: All applicants must be current employees of the Office of the Comptroller of the City of New York and meet the following criteria:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and five (5) or more years of related full-time satisfactory experience in a public relations, communications, journalism, or, advertising, at a financial services institution, policy/research organization, business organization or in a governmental setting; preferably performing functions similar to those listed in the bulleted list of job duties above.

Graduate degree in public relations, communications, journalism or a related field may be substituted for one year of experience mentioned above.

  • Superior writing, communication, research, and presentation skills - Exceptional organizational, time management, and administrative skills and ability to coordinate multiple diverse projects and set and meet deadlines - Ability to maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials - Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and an ability to learn new technologies.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
