The Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for an Engineering Technician IV in our Engineering and Technology Division. The responsibilities of this position include surveying, field investigation and verification, inventory management, file and as built records management, Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) technician support, Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinate collection and support, and supervision, management and coordination of assigned staff.Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
Four years of experience in an engineering-related field is required; at least four years experience in drafting, GIS, or surveying is preferred.Valid Driver's License is required
Work Location: 1316 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, VA
Work Hours: Monday through Friday from 7 am to 3:30 pm, with occasional overtime
**This position is designated as an Essential position which means you may be required to work extended, rotating, after hours, nights weekends and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.**
- Provide surveying services to gather or verify manhole rim and invert structure elevations/locations through conventional survey methods.
- Manage Utilities GPS collection program. Tasks include collecting, reviewing, and processing GPS coordinate data as well as managing staff involved in this effort.
- Review, interpret, QA/QC, and correct as built drawing submissions for accuracy, legibility and completeness.
- File, record, and organize the acceptance of GPS coordinates and as built drawing submissions.
- Generate and edit GIS Maps using ArcGIS
- Use Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Power BI with a high degree of proficiency.
- Exhibit high interpersonal and communication skills to convey, direct or translate information to Engineering and Operations personnel.
- Manage the storage, upkeep, upgrade, and use of equipment required for Surveying and GPS activities.
