Library Information Technologist

Distinguishing Features of the Class: This is a technical position involving responsibility to diagnose and repair problems associated with hardware and software, to develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for equipment and to install hardware/software of computers. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Director. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

Resolves problems associated with Library software and hardware. Also, may operate other technological devices such as scanners, printers, iPads, Kindles and projection and teleconferencing equipment;

Researches and installs emerging computer software and hardware;

Serves as a resource and troubleshooter to staff and patrons;

Trains staff and patrons;

Designs and updates Library Web pages and apps.;

Manages implementation of automated Library system and other Library applications;

Assists with the digitalization of existing Library media;

Serves regular shifts on the circulation desk.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Full Performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics:

Knowledge of computer hardware and software; Thorough knowledge of the operation of computer systems; Knowledge of diagnostic equipment; Working knowledge of computer networking systems; Ability to troubleshoot and identify hardware and software problems; Ability to operate peripheral devices such as printers, disk drives, CD ROM players, keyboards, network servers, modems; Ability to install computer software, diagnose software related problems and differentiate between hardware and software problems; Ability to communicate technical advice to users; Ability to teach use of software and hardware to staff and patrons; Good interpersonal skills;

Minimum Qualifications:  

  1. Possession of an associate degree in computer science, computer technology, computer repair or a closely related field; and one-year experience maintaining computer hardware; or
  2. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; and three years’ experience maintaining computer hardware; or
  3. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (1) thru (2) above.

Conducts research on emerging software and hardware makes recommendations for new technology and upgrades.  Provides liaison between the library and vendors to ensure timely and non-disruptive implementation of technology.  Installs and troubleshoots hardware and software in the library setting. Resolves problems associated with library hardware and software. Operates computers, peripherals, and other technological devices including scanners, printers, iPads, Kindles, and projection and teleconferencing equipment, among others.

Trains and assists library staff and patrons in the use of computer and other technology hardware and software both individually and in a classroom setting.  Provides support both in person and remotely for library staff and patrons with computer issues.

Designs and updates library web pages.

Serves regular shifts on the circulation desk.

Manages local implementation of automated library system (currently Sirsi/Dynix) and other library applications.

Assists with the digitalization of existing library media.

Assists with other audiovisual media as needed.

Other duties as assigned.
