The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill several Van Driver, Part Time vacancies within Oakland Parks, Recreation and Youth Development.  Work schedule includes irregular hours and weekends.

Under general direction, incumbents perform vehicle inspections and complete vehicle logs; pick up and drop off program participants at sites, centers and other off-site locations; deliver departmental supplies and equipment; prepare required daily reports; and perform related duties as assigned.

  • Operate vehicles exceeding 26,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight rating, vehicles with 3 or more axles weighing 6,000 lbs. or more, or buses/vans carrying more than 10 passengers including the driver.
  • Pick up and drop off program participants at program sites, centers and other field-trip locations.
  • Perform pre-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Fuel vehicles.
  • Clean, maintain, check and inspect City vehicles; deliver vehicles for upkeep and repair as needed.
  • Plan and organize routes for trips, excursions and/or tours.
  • Refer phone calls and/or concerns regarding driving arrangements and deliveries to appropriate staff.
  • Report all incidents as they relate to passengers.
  • Load, deliver and unload departmental supplies and equipment to sites, centers and other locations.
  • Assist disabled individuals with entering and exiting the vehicle and ensure that all passengers are utilizing necessary safety devices such as seatbelts, car seats, etc.
  • Maintain logs and prepare daily reports for submission to supervisor.
  • Complete accident and injury reports as appropriate and prepare claims for damage to City property.
Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications is acceptable.
 
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
 
Experience:
One year of experience driving automobiles/vehicles. 
 
Knowledge of:
  • City of Oakland geography.
  • Parks and Recreation facilities locations.
  • Basic mathematics.
  • Recordkeeping and reports.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Customer service.
  • City rules, policies and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Drive a commercial passenger vehicle and/or bus.
  • Perform vehicle inspections.
  • Keep records and prepare reports.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Be comfortable around young children, youth and adults.
  • Use a calculator and computer if necessary.
  • Provide safety briefings for passengers and maintain a safe environment while driving.
  • Be punctual.
  • Follow accident/incident report procedures.
  • Read maps and use on-line direction programs.
  • Respond effectively and safely in the event of a vehicle malfunction or accident.
  • Safely operate a wheelchair lift.
  • Safely lift up to fifty (50) lbs.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with community members, employees, and others contacted in the performance of required duties.

Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid Class B California Driver's License with "Passenger Endorsement" throughout the tenure of employment and will be required to participate in the City's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program. Incumbents may be required to possess and maintain an "air brake endorsement" if assigned to drive commercial vehicles with air braking systems.

Must obtain Basic First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificates within 90 days of employment. Possession of one or both certifications prior to being appointed is highly desirable.
 
Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age or older.

Must pass a thorough background investigation.
The Selection Process
 
Stage I: The first stage in the selection process will consist of a review of each applicant employment application, a current (within the last 30 days) Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) printout of the last three years driving record (DMV printout must list possession of current, valid Class B California Driver's License with "Passenger Endorsement") and supplemental questionnaire for minimum qualifications (weighted pass/fail). Applications submitted without all required materials will not be given further consideration.

Stage II: The second stage will consist of forwarding the hiring list of qualified candidates to the department to be further considered.  

The City of Oakland reserves the right to modify the selection process as necessary to conform to administrative or business necessity.
