As an intern at the Oceanside Public Library, you will promote literacy, diversity, and the love of reading. You will work to improve our Teen Zone and create a more welcoming (virtual and physical) space for all. The Library will have several paid internship periods throughout the year. Multiple Interns will be hired for each internship period and will work 15 hours per week for 12 weeks. These hours will take place during Library open hours Monday through Friday. Interns will take on leadership roles in the Library, work on committees and oversee projects. There will be a large focus on personal and professional development leadership and developing soft skills. Learn how to be the ideal candidate for your future job by improving your interview skills, resume building, and gaining practical work experience. Assignments will depend on interest and desires of the Intern, and the needs of the Library. Possible assignments could include social media, programming, photography, and library collection responsibilities.
The ideal candidate for an internship with the Oceanside Public Library would be able to work independently, seek out ways to improve library services, and be willing to give input to librarians as needed on improvements that can be made to library spaces and programming. Must be a hard worker, motivated, curious, and comfortable with basic technology.
There are no set dates for internship periods and summer-only positions are not available.
Perform a wide variety of routine administrative and technical assignments specific to a department's needs which may include manual, operational, administrative, research, planning, engineering, and analytical tasks; receive on-the-job exposure to local facilities, equipment, and operational functions; learn to perform various department and project tasks and procedures; learn to perform tasks in the operation, monitoring and maintenance of equipment and facilities; learn to record, update, interpret and report data; research and analyze data and write reports; learn and apply the practices, procedures, techniques, regulations and laws relating to area assigned; learn and apply safety practices and procedures related to work environment; shadow supervisor and other department employees to learn about programs and operational aspects of assigned area of responsibility; perform other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.
Key Responsibilities- Take on leadership roles during events and programs.
- Form and work in committees to oversee projects.
- Participate in career preparation and resume improvement workshops.
- Learn the principles of library budgeting, marketing and networking.
- Take on an active role in redesigning and improving the library’s Teen Zone space.
- Learn about Teen collections and actively work to improve them by seeking and recommending new additions of Young Adult books of all genres
- Assist with the improvement of Oceanside Public Library’s Teen webpage design and social media presence.
Knowledge of:- Basic principles and practices of assigned area of responsibility.
- Modern office procedures, computer software and hardware.
- Principles of mathematics, reading, and writing.
- Interest in working with children, teens, and their families as well as the oceanside community.
