Nature of Work: This is skilled manual work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of street systems. Employees in this classification exercise some independence in the performance of their duties, and may act as a lead worker, however any major changes in work procedures and policies are discussed with and approved by a designated supervisor.
Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.
Two (2) years of experience in pouring, repairing, and/or finishing concrete.
Special Qualifications: Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
Must possess a Class “A” commercial motor vehicle operator’s license with “N” endorsement and no air brake restrictions or a Class "A" commercial motor vehicle operator's license with "N" endorsement and "O" restriction by the end of the probationary period.
Must possess a Second Grade Hoisting and Portable Engineer’s Certificate by the end of the probationary period.
May be required to obtain forklift operator's certificate if assigned to operate forklift.
Pay Range: $22.46 with step increases to $30.97 Hourly

Examination Information: The multiple-choice/written examination will be on March 29, 2024, at the Omaha/Douglas Civic Center, 1819 Farnam St. An invitation via email to the exam will be given to candidates once their application has been received, reviewed by a recruiter, and accepted to the test for the position. The test is designed to assess knowledge of the job, skills, and abilities of this position. The passing score on the examination is 50%. This will be weighted 100% in the final score.
Veteran Points: To claim five (5) points for veteran’s preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes the date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by March 29, 2024.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in concrete finishing.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Skill in the use and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment.
- Skill in concrete preparation and pouring.
- Ability to detect defects or malfunctions in structures and equipment; determine the methods, materials, and equipment required; and make necessary repairs or adjustments.
- Ability to plan and oversee the work of subordinates.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and sketches.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public.
- Ability to understand oral or written instructions.
- Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Essential Functions: Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this class.
- Sets forms and string lines, establishes elevation and grade, pours and finishes concrete for sidewalks, driveways, streets, curbs, and parking areas.
- Breaks up and removes concrete.
- Cleans and prepares surface areas.
- Cuts and sets expansion joints.
- Identifies areas in need of repair, fills potholes and repairs broken sections of concrete as necessary.
- Constructs and repairs concrete block and retaining walls.
- Repairs and replaces brick and cobblestone.
- Estimates costs, orders supplies, and maintains inventory.
- Prepares reports of work completed and materials used.
- Cleans and cares for tools and equipment.
- May act as machine operator or as signal person for machine operator.
- Operates snow plows to remove snow from streets.
- Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.
