Work Type: Full-Time
Nature of Work: This is skilled work at the sub-journey level in a trade such as plumbing, carpentry, street marking, or ice rink maintenance.
Education and Experience: (The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.)
Special Qualifications: Depending upon the division in which an incumbent is assigned, he or she may be required to possess and maintain a valid class O automobile drivers license or a class B commercial drivers license with N endorsement and no air brake restriction, plus a forklift operators certificate issued by the city.
Pay Range: $20.17 with step increases to $25.52/Hourly

Examination Information: The examination will consist of a structured interview which will be scheduled at a later date. The structured interview is designed to assess job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. The final eligibility list will be assembled from those candidates achieving a passing score of 50% on the structured interview (100% weight)
Veteran Points: To claim five (5) points for veteran’s preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by August 15, 2023.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in at least two of the building trades
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the building trades
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operations
- Knowledge of the geography of the City of Omaha
- Skill in the use and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment
- Ability to understand sketches, plans, and area maps
- Ability to prepare reports of work completed and materials used
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public
- Ability to understand oral or written instructions
- Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Ability to reach, balance, bend, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, walk, push, pull, and lift 50 to 100% of the time and to climb and stoop from 50 to 75% of the time
- Ability to use up to one hundred (100) pounds of force occasionally, up to fifty (50) pounds of force frequently, and up to twenty (20) pounds of force constantly to move objects
Essential Functions: (Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this class.)
- Repairs and maintains refrigeration systems, checks for leaks and keeps oil and Freon at proper levels, and repairs heating and air conditioning systems
- Drives ice smoothing vehicle to improve ice skating surfaces
- Embeds tape into the ice to establish playing rink lines
- Installs and repairs wooden and chain link fences
- Assembles new playground equipment and inspects, repairs, or replaces broken equipment such as fences, cages, backstops, bleachers, swings, and slides
- Paints lane markings on city streets by driving or operating sprayers on a striper truck
- Directs other laborer when assisting in applying proper color, type, and location of pavement markings
- Loads materials and supplies onto striper equipment
- Measures and marks streets for proper placement of pavement markings
- Installs cold plastic pavement marking materials
- Prepares reports of work completed and materials used
- Keeps inventory of pavement marking material
- Inspects the conditions of existing pavement markings and plans for their replacement
- Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor
- Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification
- The following are specific to the designated division: Building Maintenance-Handyman Program Inspects the work to be done at project sites and prepares estimates of the material and labor costs involved
- Performs rough-in and finish carpentry such as hanging or repairing drywall, building wheelchair ramps, and repairing or replacing floors
- Repairs stairways, windows, and doors, including screens
- Installs stairs, handrails, and window and door locks
- Performs household minor repairs and painting duties
- Compiles records and prepares reports of completed work
