What you'll do:

This position is responsible for routine work involving planning and implementing recreation programs/athletic programs/special events (depending on which one we are advertising for) for the City. An employee in this classification is responsible for supervising groups of children, teens, adults and seniors. Planning, organizing, scheduling, coordinating, and implementing recreational activities, events, athletics, and classes; selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating contracted and part time personnel. The incumbent requires initiative and independent judgment in accomplishing assignments.

  • Plans, organizes, and leads a wide variety of recreational and leisure services activities for participants of all age groups.
  • Works closely with contracted personnel for programs or events and schedules facility accordingly.
  • Performs participant registration for recreational activities and collects fees for programs, activities, and events.
  • Processes rental or special event permits as directed.
  • Maintains contacts with community groups and organizations, including annual agreements, background screening, compliance, current certificate of insurance. etc.
  • Prepares newsletters, flyers, posters and other materials to promote programs/events to increase community awareness and individual participation.
  • Performs reporting and record keeping duties for grant related activities in the Parks & Recreation department.
  • Supervises part-time personnel and volunteers when necessary.
  • Takes photographs of recreational and event activities for the City website.
  • Assists with department and Citywide special events.
  • Orders supplies as needed for facility, programs, or events.
  • Assists with front desk support.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associate's Degree or completion of minimum of 60 college credits.
  • Two (2) years of related work experience.
  • Must have a valid CPR, First Aid, and AED certification or the ability to obtain these certifications within six (6) months.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must possess FEMA 100, 200, and 700 certifications, or the ability to obtain within the first six (6) months of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in summer recreation programs.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation and group activities.
  • Knowledge of proper telephone etiquette and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skill in using computers for data entry.
  • Skill in using computers for word processing and accounting purposes.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan and implement classes, various activities, and special events.
  • Ability to maintain complex records and prepare technical reports.
  • Ability to work a digital camera.
  • Ability to maintain discipline and encourage compliance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to perform strenuous labor in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, officials, and the public.
  • Work environment is typically performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity and responsiveness to changes that include goals, priorities, and needs of the organization and position.
  • The work is light and requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  • Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, manual dexterity, hearing, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
