Job Details
Summary of Duties: Under basic supervision, the Crime Analyst uses basic knowledge of administrative, intelligence, tactical, and strategic crime analysis to review and analyze crime reports, interpret patterns and trends, disseminate information, and make recommendations related to possible suspects, potential crimes, location of future crimes, and methods of operation.

- Prepares monthly patrol productivity reports, summary and crime comparisons, and Uniform Crime Reporting reports.
- Provides analysis of crime and traffic trends to officers, detectives, and command staff to assist in addressing current issues and provide data to formulate response plans.
- Analyzes crime trends based on raw data; creates maps of crime trends and traffic crash trends.
- Compares performance measures with current crime and traffic trends to improve and maintain the safety of the City.
- Facilitates the exchange of crime information within the police department and with other agencies.
- Identifies repeat offenders to assist in crime analysis; identifies and reports spatial and temporal trends and patterns of criminal activity.
- Provides officers and supervisory staff with objective analyses to assist in problem-solving, scheduling, and directed patrol.
- Disseminates crime information to appropriate personnel within the department and to outside agencies.
- Responds to internal and external requests for information and records from police, operational and administrative staff, citizens, news media, and other law enforcement agencies.
- Prepares crime bulletins and photo line-ups; captures still images from surveillance footage.
- Assists with court ordered expunctions.
- Attends networking and task force meetings with outside agencies.
- Attends meetings to maintain current knowledge of latest technology, crime analysis processes, etc.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
Marginal Duties:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Decisions: The incumbent determines appropriate methodology to research and analyze varied complex data to arrive at logical and documented conclusions. The incumbent uses initiative and discretionary judgment to recognize and exercise deviation from accepted practice when required. The incumbent uses discretionary judgment in determining information to be gathered and disseminated to citizens, department directors, and other employees. The incumbent determines the appropriate application of various software programs in order to obtain usable results based on the analysis of the needs of users.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of: Operations and activities of police departments; police procedures and the theory; principles, practices, and methods of crime analysis; research methodologies; the Uniform Crime Report and the National Incident Based Reporting System; State, Federal, and local laws, statistics, and office management methods, procedures, and practices.
Skill in: Operating a personal computer and peripheral equipment; using software, such as Windows, Crystal Reports, databases, spreadsheets, word processing, records management systems; operating computer-aided dispatch systems and GIS systems; planning, organizing and writing documentation for computer software applications; writing and installing script language programs to automate routine processes; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or related field.
Experience: One (1) year of experience researching, analyzing, and interpreting data, preferably in a law enforcement environment.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements
Licenses and Certifications: Must possess a valid driver license must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license within 30 days of hire per state law). Must obtain certification as a Crime and Intelligence Analyst within two years of employment. Must obtain TCIC/NCIC certification upon employment.
Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: This is primarily an office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
