This is a non-exempt position under the day-to-day direction of the Park Area Crew Leader and under the general supervision of the Parks Supervisor. This position cares for assigned parks and recreation facilities including buildings, walls, bridges, memorials, streetscape planters, and masonry structures. Assists with emergency debris removal. Operates various pieces of equipment and uses hand tools in the performance of duties.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
 
  • Design, build, inspects, reports, maintains, restore, and repair stone, brick, concrete, and various masonry structures
  • Builds, repairs, and restores historic masonry structures using traditional techniques
  • Carving and repairing headstones and statues
  • Ability to read and follow technical drawings
  • Cutting, shaping, and dressing materials for the construction of stone, concrete and tile structures
  • Builds concrete forms, pours, and finishes concrete
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation buildings and structures
  • May assist other Parks staff in emergency tree branch and debris removal situations necessitating the brief operation of a chipper to facilitate such work
  • Makes repairs of swimming pools decks, surfaces, and walls
  • Assists Park Area Crew Leader in the removal of graffiti from City property
  • Assists Park Area Crew Leader in the removal of snow from park drives, sidewalks, and other City facilities, river trails, and public sidewalks
  • May perform the duties of similar classifications of an equal or lower pay grade
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
 
The physical standards an employee must meet in order to perform the essential job duties with or without a reasonable accommodation include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Lifts, pushes or pulls equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds, frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Frequently stands and walks for prolonged periods of time to observe for safety hazards and perform daily functions
  • Frequently climbs ladders and stairs in a multi-level facility to perform general masonry work
  • Uses manual dexterity to manipulate supplies, tools, and equipment
  • Uses visual acuity to read operating manuals and instructions; safely operate a vehicle and equipment; identify hazards; and perform daily functions
  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movements including sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, twisting, and balancing
 This position requires:
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to successfully perform the essential duties of the Mason classification
  • Knowledge of mathematical computations and tabulations, sufficient to perform the essential functions, which include basic arithmetic, division, and multiplication
  • Knowledge and ability to adhere to safety policies
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to make minor mechanical repairs safely and properly on trucks and equipment
  • Ability to physically perform the duties of the position, including lifting equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to operate the following types of equipment safely and properly: pickup trucks, dump trucks, backhoe (front bucket only), skid steer, hand and power tools, and cement mixers 
  • Ability to make general repairs safely and properly to the following: walls, river trail bridges, streetscape planters, and parks and recreation buildings and structures
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work
  • Ability to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, the public and other agencies, and other organizations
  • Ability to perform all the job duties in a safe manner
In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above, this position requires:
 
  • A high school diploma, GED, or higher education
  • At least six (6) months of successful experience in connection with building maintenance including the operation of equipment, such as: pickup trucks, dump trucks, hand power tools, and small cement mixers
  • A valid driver’s license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment
    1. License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification 
    2. During the course of employment, a valid license must be maintained, and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license
 
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 
 
Individuals may be scheduled to work on weekends.  Work is primarily performed outside.  May be subject to emergency call-out. Must be able to lift weights up to 100 lbs. May use non-restricted and restricted chemicals.   Use of safety equipment is required.   Individuals may be exposed to heights and other dangerous conditions.  
 
All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout the term of employment. Failure to obtain or maintain licenses and certifications may result in demotion or termination. 
 
Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information. This requirement applies to all existing City employees as well as external candidates seeking to fill positions that meet the given criteria.
