- Perform Preventive Maintenance Inspections (PMI) and repair mechanical defects on all types of City vehicles and equipment.
- Assist and participate in the general repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment.
- Perform brake inspections, brake replacement on light-duty vehicles, cooling system services, engine, transmission, and differential oil changes, tune-ups and valve adjustments.
- Perform tire repairs and replacements on both light and heavy-duty vehicles.
- Perform inspection and data information collection of newly purchased vehicles and equipment.

Knowledge of:- Preventive maintenance inspection methods
- Electrical, hydraulics and mechanics
- Methods, materials and tools used in the light and heavy equipment repair trade
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the performance of work
- Interact effectively with the public and employees
- Read and interpret pertinent laws, codes, safety orders, and repair manuals
- Perform semi-skilled mechanical work including troubleshooting and repair of equipment
- Understand and carry out verbal and written directions
- Perform all tasks in accordance with applicable federal and state safety standards
- Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying;
- typical education would include a high school diploma or equivalent. Supplemental specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel-powered equipment is highly desirable.
- Typical experience would include one year of automotive servicing work.
- Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment. Must obtain California Class A driver's license within six months of employment.
- Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces, participate in the Confined Space Program, and perform confined space rescue if needed.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification highly desirable. Successful completion of ASE Series test Medium & Heavy-Duty Truck Series T8 Preventive Maintenance Inspection PMI is required upon completion of probation. Note: The City reimburses employees' cost associated with these certifications.
Required Tools: Hand tools sized to a minimum of 1".

This classification is distinguished from the Mechanic II in that this classification performs semi-skilled work and is not considered journey level.

- Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)
- Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test (depending on position)
Veteran’s Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating “Honorable Discharge” from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
