The City of Roanoke is seeking an Accountant to maintain financial records, primarily in the area of financial reporting, contracts and accounts receivables. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to compiling and analyzing financial information used in the preparation of complex financial reports; preparing journal entries, financial reports, statements and verifying financial data; and performing reconciliations & preparing written analyses or account fluctuations, budget variances. The successful candidate will assemble statistical and accounting data on request, assist independent auditors as required, assist other departments by providing information on financial matters, and prepare budgetary or financial reports as needed. Additionally, they will provide oversight & assistance as required in operation of business areas of municipal government and apply systematic collection action to collect delinquent accounts. Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in accounting or a related field; three to five years related experience and/or training in accounting, preferably in the public sector; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Certified Public Accountant preferred.

SUMMARYMaintains financial records, primarily in the area of financial reporting, contracts and fixed asset accounting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Performs assigned accounting functions in accordance with GAAP and applicable Federal and
State legislation for assigned area of responsibility and accounts
Compiles and analyzes financial information used in the preparation of complex financial reports
Maintains specialized databases, researches and makes recommendations to upgrade or modify
departmental information management systems and procedures
Prepares journal entries, financial reports, statements and verifies financial data to ensure that data is current and accurate
Assembles statistical and accounting data on request
Assists independent auditors as required
Assists other departments by providing information on financial matters
Researches and provides financial data on request
Performs reconciliations & prepares written analyses or account fluctuations, budget variances
Prepares budgetary and/or financial reports
Provides oversight & assistance as required in operation of business areas of municipal government
Applies systematic collection action to collect delinquent accounts

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in accounting or a related field; three to five years related experience and/or training in accounting, preferably in the public sector; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Public Accountant preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret journals, financial reports, or governmental regulations. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints orally and in writing. Ability to communicate effectively with management, public groups or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions
REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.
