General Description

Stock Clerks perform duties such as receiving, storing and issuing stock and keeping basic records for inventory control. Employees may be required to operate mechanical storehouse equipment. The incumbent may occasionally be required to work outdoors in severe weather conditions, picking up and delivering supplies. Some work is performed under the direct supervision of high-ranking stores personnel but employees are often required to work independently. Related work is performed as required.

This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.

A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.

Typical Work Activities

  • Receives written and called-in supply and equipment requisitions, fills and records orders, and prepares supplies for shipping or delivery;
  • Receives shipments from vendors, unloads materials, checks shipping orders against purchase orders, records received goods, and signs delivery sheets;
  • Prepares supplies by counting, weighing, packaging and labeling;
  • Checks shipments for quantity, condition, and accuracy;
  • Records damages and shortages, and informs supervisor;
  • Stocks storehouse or stockroom by placing supplies and equipment in designated bulk storage areas or in open stock;
  • Opens bulk packages of stock and unpacks supplies, breaks supplies into units of issuance, and stocks shelves;
  • Completes entries and files inventory records, and assists in taking periodic physical inventory;
  • Cleans work areas and performs routine maintenance chores;
  • Distributes parts at a counter or to a central shipping area;
  • Picks up supplies and materials from vendor or storehouse and delivers these directly to user departments, driving a light truck, van, or automobile;
  • Inputs data and performs stock transactions using a computer terminal;
  • May operate or use a variety of storehouse equipment, such as hand jack and fork lift, hand cart and flat truck;
  • May test or make minor repairs to tools or equipment;
  • May load and unload trucks;
  • May perform basic equipment assembly, when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

A. Graduation from high school or possession of G.E.D.* OR
B. Where diploma is lacking, work experience as defined in 1 OR 1 may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis:

  • Experience in warehouse or stores functions performing tasks such as receiving, storing or issuing stock;
  • Clerical experience involving maintenance of inventory records, or other record keeping or record control activities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid NYS Class D driver's license at time of appointment.
