Technical Services and Reader Services
Rochester Public Library (RPL), a division of the City of Rochester, MN, is a very busy downtown library and bookmobile (with more than 60,000 cardholders, a collection of more than 460,000 items, over 1.7 million items checked out annually and the busiest bookmobile in the state of Minnesota). RPL serves the City of Rochester, Olmsted County, and visitors from all over the world.
Nature of Work
In support of our Technical Services division you would maintain the library catalog through copy and original cataloging, subject heading analysis, and classifying materials for easy and equitable access by the public. In support of our Reader Services division you will provide advisory services to the public in person and via phone and email, support patrons using library collections, equipment, and services including digital collections.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time position, where the individual hired will be working primarily weekdays, with some night and weekend shifts.
Pay:
The starting pay rate for this role is $33.31 an hour.

Maintain library collections and bibliographic control- Perform copy and original cataloging, subject heading analysis and classify materials for easy access by the public
- Maintain quality control of new items being added to the collection and revise old information as necessary to maintain consistency
- Search appropriate databases for both bibliographic and authority records and download into local database as appropriate
- Evaluate donations for addition to collection areas as assigned by the Division Head.
Provide direct service to the public- Provide readers advisory services to the public in person and via telephone, e-mail, instant messaging and other means of communication.
- Assist patrons in locating information using a variety of reference and readers advisory tools, resources, and electronic databases.
- Provide support to patrons using library collections, equipment and services including digital collections.
- Conduct complex searches based on extensive knowledge of information sources and databases.
- Assist patrons with reserves and interlibrary loan requests.
- Meet or exceed the library's customer service standards in all interactions with the public and staff.
- Explain and interpret library policies and procedures to the public.
Provide programming and instruction to the public and staff - Create and maintain information and training documents for the public & staff as assigned.
- Provide bibliographic instruction to staff and customers to enable them to better understand and use specific library resources.
- Coordinate library programming or classes, and community partnerships
- Provide one-on-one instruction both formally & informally.
Miscellaneous- Coordinate and participate on special project task forces and work groups as assigned.
- Be an active participant on the team to help further the goals of the library and promote library services.
- Participate in the training and directing the work of student, clerical, volunteer or paraprofessional assistants.

Education and ExperienceMaster's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college with relevant coursework and work experience with the general public.
Desirable QualificationsExperience in: - copy and original cataloging, subject heading analysis, and classifying materials with a focus in fiction cataloging
- providing customer service in a public library
- collection development and maintenance
- integrated library systems software
- library databases, eBook and other digital collections;
- providing readers advisory services;
- working with special and diverse populations
- managing electronic resources
Understanding of:
- the relationship between cataloging, circulation, and the online catalog
- multiple thesauruses including LCSH, BISAC, and Homosaurus
