Salary:               $47,985 - $66,248 DOQ
Position Type:   Full-Time

General Description:

The purpose of this class within the organization is to inspect commercial installations for compliance with local, state and federal fire prevention codes and ordinances, and participates in other fire safety programs as assigned.

This class works independently, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

 
Minimum Education and Experience:

Requires an Associate’s Degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college in fire science and technology or related field.

Requires four years in fire inspection and prevention or closely related experience.

The equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

SC State Fire Marshal Cerification and/or ICC Fire Inspector Certification

Fire and Life Safety Educator Certificate

Fire/Arson Investigation Certificates  

Valid Driver’s License  

CPR and First Responder Training



Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Some knowledge of the geographical layout of the City, including streets and principle buildings.

Some knowledge of hazardous materials.

Ability to learn modern principles and techniques of fire prevention and firefighting.

Ability to learn codes and ordinances pertaining to fire prevention and fire safety.

Ability to learn modern fire safety inspection techniques.

Ability to identify and define hazards and recommend effective remedial action.

Ability to conduct harmonious discussions with property owners to persuade them of desired action.

Ability to enforce codes and ordinances firmly, tactfully, and impartially.

Ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing; ability to follow written and oral instructions quickly and correctly; demonstrates effective computer skills.

Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.

Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers.  Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.

Work is performed onsite.  The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Serves the department as a Fire Inspector; conducts fire safety inspections and conducts certificate of occupancy.

Interprets and enforces pertinent fire prevention codes, laws, and regulations.

Participates in a comprehensive fire inspection program to reveal and rectify fire hazards; personally inspects structures; provides technical advice to collaborate with other City departments.

Plans and presents fire safety education classes for the public and private school system, businesses, civic and community groups, and the general public.

Participates in the smoke detector program with installing and sharing fire safety education material.

Assists primary fire investigators on fire scenes to determine cause and origin of fires; assumes primary investigator role as appointed and deemed necessary by supervisory personnel.  Off-duty call-in/rotating schedule is required when serving in this capacity.

Receives and reviews a variety of required reports and related documents.

Participates in fire protection systems acceptance testing, such as fire pumps, clean agents, sprinkler systems, alarm systems, and commercial hood systems.

Attends training, conferences, seminars, and meetings to remain knowledgeable of modern fire prevention and inspection methods, current codes, practices, procedures, maintains required certifications.

Participates in department training activities; serves as instructor for selected in-house training courses.

Prepares and/or processes a variety of documents, including fire prevention inspection records and reports, certificate of occupancy, monthly reports, daily activity reports, diagrams, etc.

Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.

Note:
Possibility of filling at a lower level depending on certification and experience.  Fire Inspector I: $39,486 - $54,496
