JOB SUMMARY: This position assists in the provision of recreation programs.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Recreation Programs Coordinator assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the City Administrative Policy Manual; the City of Rocky Mount Personnel Manual; OSHA requirements; and other safety requirements. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assists in the operations of transporting children. Success in this position results in the provision of quality recreational programs for area residents.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other City staff, children, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide transportation services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while driving a school bus or at summer campsites at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light or heavy objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed on a school bus, outdoors, or at summer campsites.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has functional supervision over assigned part-time personnel and full time when transporting from site to site.

The Bus Driver position is for the City of Rocky Mount's Summer Camp program. Working hours vary on the transportation needs of each summer camp site but are executed between the hours of operation of 7am-6pm, Monday - Friday. - Trained and Skilled: A bus driver must be well trained. Also, should be a skilled driver and must be licensed to drive the class of vehicle that is operating
- Stamina and Multitasking Skills: The work of bus driving often involves loading and unloading of luggage and frequent opening of doors. Therefore, the driver must be physically fit. Also, he/she must be able to multitask
- Patience: As a bus driver you must be patient and calm in dealing with situations like irate passengers and traffic congestion
- Safety Consciousness: Must be a person who values lives and must think about the safety of passengers and other road users. This will make to drive carefully
- Ensure passengers feel safe and secure
- Ensure passengers' luggage is safely loaded and unloaded
- Ensure timely conveyance of passengers to their destination
- Read the map and check weather and traffic reports to determine the best time to travel, and the best route to take
- Keep all documents and receipts of the vehicle and maintenance services secure
- Maintain a travel log to record locations traveled to, travel time, and work hours
- Keep an accurate record of daily revenues and expenses
- Must be focused, confident, and observant while driving
- Possess effective communication and team play skills, as well as the ability to adhere to instructions.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Clearance from Nash-Rocky Mount Public School system transportation department and the City OF Rocky Mount.
- Knowledge of city and school system transportation guidelines.
- Knowledge of summer camp policies and procedures.
- Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
