Payroll Audit Clerk
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This clerical position involves assisting in the audit, review and verification of payrolls and related documents. Attention to detail is an important factor of this position. Direct supervision is received from an administrative supervisor in the department. General direction in the form of on-going training, may be received from a Senior Payroll Audit Clerk. The incumbent does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Audits payrolls against appointment papers, budget authorizations, social security withholding taxes, health insurance deductions, etc.;
Assists with the processing of retirement documents;
Computes and checks computations for items to be deducted from the payroll;
Contacts units and divisions concerning the auditing of the payroll;
Answers inquiries concerning payroll matters;
Files tax and assessments and payroll registers for the department;
Aids in the review and processing of weekly payroll;
Aids in the review and processing of weekly accruals;
Tracks and processes garnishments and child support updating computer records as necessary;
Ability to do all weekly payroll processing if necessary;
Performs a variety of related duties as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods of maintaining and reviewing financial records, good knowledge of Business Arithmetic and English; working knowledge of the practices and principles of payroll auditing; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to make arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately; attention to detail.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two-year college or university with an Associate's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field and one year experience in maintaining financial accounts and records, six months of which shall have involved payroll auditing or preparation; OR
(B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and three years of experience as outlined in (A) above, six months of which shall have involved payroll auditing or preparation; OR

(C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
