What are the responsibilities and job description for the PLANNING COMMISSIONER position at City of Signal Hill?
The City of Signal Hill has a vacancy for the Planning Commission to serve an unexpired term through May 31, 2025.
The recruitment will close on Friday, September 20, 2024 at 4:30 p.m.
Candidates will be notified of their application status
and receive a confirmation of the interview date no later than September 27, 2024.
Commission interviews and appointment will be conducted at the regular meeting of the Signal Hill City Council on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., or a special meeting of the Signal Hill City Council (date to be determined) based on the total number of applications received.
This is a part-time essential volunteer position with the City. The commissioners receive a monthly stipend in recognition of their service.
The newly appointed commissioner will begin serving on the Planning Commission at the next regularly scheduled Commission meeting following appointment.
The Planning Commission holds hearings and renders decisions on land use matters, including environmental review, subdivisions, site plan and design review, and variances. The Commission conducts special studies concerning land use issues and makes recommendations to the City Council concerning conditional use permits, zoning ordinances and general plan amendments. Compensation is $125 per month.
The Commission meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. to address Commission business.

To serve as a Commissioner, you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age or older; and a registered voter and resident of the City of Signal Hill at least 29 days prior to the date of appointment. Commission members shall continue to reside in the City for the duration of the term of office (Signal Hill City Charter Section 602). Architectural, design, land use, or zoning knowledge is beneficial, but not required.
