What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrical Lineman position at City of Sparta?

SUMMARY

Performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical distribution system.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1) Operates line truck; sets, straightens, and stubs poles; installs cross arms, pins, insulators, conductors, transformers, outdoor lighting, and related hardware and equipment.

2) Installs new service lines; disconnects service, installs temporary service lines, repairs service lines; installs meters.

3) Installs and maintains underground distribution facilities and equipment.

4) Inspects transformers, poles, and lines; repairs lines; troubleshoots power outages; identifies problems, and plans repairs.

5) Paints transformers and steel electrical towers.

6) Prepares field reports and material lists.

7) Cleans vehicles, equipment, warehouse, and work area.

OTHER DUTIES

- Loads and unloads equipment and materials on/from vehicles; carries explosives.

- Repairs traffic, street, and security lights as needed; programs traffic light controllers.

- Trims trees as needed; sweeps, piles, loads, and unloads debris.

- Performs related work as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides work direction to Apprentice Linemen, Groundsmen and other assigned employees as needed. Supervisory responsibilities are performed in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training and assigning and directing work.

REQUIRED ABILITIES AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

· Knowledge of the methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical distribution system.

· Ability to skillfully operate bucket truck, digger truck, ditch witch, backhoe, tow motor, chain saws, and related equipment.

· Ability to read and interpret maps, sketches, and blueprints.

· Knowledge of first aid procedures.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and preferably a completion of five year Lineman apprenticeship or Journeyman program such as SELCAT or TVPPA.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
