The City of Tacoma is currently accepting applications for the position of legal assistant. Working in a fast paced environment, a person in this position will perform a variety of legal support services including client contact; document preparation, organization, and processing; research; and related clerical activities. As part of the City Attorney's Office, assignments may include litigation/labor employment law, criminal and municipal law.

An equivalent combination to: graduation from high school supplemented by one year of legal assistant coursework including word processing, legal office procedures and legal terminology, plus a minimum of two years of recent and relevant legal assistant experience involving preparing and processing legal forms and documents.NOTE: Experience can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

SKILLS:
- Work planning/prioritization/time management
- Organizational awareness, including City structure, roles, and responsibilities of work unit
- Accurate and timely processing and preparation of a wide variety of legal forms, documents and instruments
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Read, interpret, apply and explain codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures
- Perform clerical duties such as filing, copying, phone answering, and typing
- Maintain records and prepare reports
- Work independently with little direction
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their application and supplemental questions rated and scored. Candidates must pass this examination in order to be placed on the eligible list for interview and hiring consideration. Candidates selected for interviews may be asked to participate in a pre-interview exercise demonstrating their skills and abilities to perform the duties of this position
Individuals given a conditional offer of employment must also pass a background check. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
