The City of Topeka (population 128,000) is seeking qualified candidates for a well-rounded planner to join our team.

This position is responsible for a range of land use duties in support of the City’s long range plans, and administration of the City’s zoning regulations, and subdivision regulations.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Respond to inquiries from citizens, public offices, developers, and other interested parties concerning comprehensive planning, zoning and subdivision regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist with duties related to neighborhood planning, historic preservation, transportation, and comprehensive planning.
  • Review and approve building permits for compliance with zoning, sign, and subdivision regulations.

We expect the successful candidate will build upon many recent accomplishments which include our award-winning Land Use and Growth Management Plan 2040, Bikeways and Pedestrian Master Plans, Complete Street Guidelines, Neighborhood Conservation Districts, Non-Residential Building Design Standards, comprehensive Sign Code update, and the citywide Housing Market Study and Strategy, and Downtown Master Plan.

Minimum Qualifications:

Planner I: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Urban Planning or a related field is required plus a minimum of one year of experience in Urban Planning, or a Master’s degree in Urban Planning.

  • Preference will be given to applicants who have a Master’s degree in Urban Planning.

Planner II: Masters degree in Community and Regional Planning or a related concentration. Two years experience working in Community and Regional Planning. (Five years of experience in municipal planning may be substituted for the Masters Degree requirement.)

All candidates must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be insurable within The City's guidelines.

Planner I entry rate of pay: $22.96 - $24.02 per hour DOQ.

Planner II entry rate of pay: $28.26 - $29.57 per hour DOQ.
