The Troy Public Library is the hub of the vibrant, dynamic, and diverse City of Troy. The Library sees over 700,000 visitors per year and serves an educated and involved community. The Community Engagement Bookmobile is a brand-new addition to the Library. Its mission is to provide library services to patrons who are unable to visit the building due to illness or injury, age or disability, or lack of time or access to transportation.
Under the direction of the Head of Community Engagement, the Library Aide supports the department's goal of bringing library services and materials out into the community.
DUTIES
- Drive the Bookmobile to various assigned locations in Troy, providing circulation services to patrons at each stop.
- Load and unload books and other materials from the Bookmobile to keep collection current.
- Assist with preparing materials for homebound patron deliveries.
- Represent the library at community fairs and events.
- Assist with programming such as monthly Books & Brews book club and Saturday Talk Time English Conversation Group.
- Assemble materials for take-home activity kits, subscription boxes, and other promotional services.
- Perform related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS
- High school degree or GED equivalent and a minimum of sixty (60) semester hours or ninety (90) quarter hours of college credits. Selected candidates must submit proof of educational attainment and official transcripts at time of offer.
- Applicants with an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
- Ability to travel around the community, loading and unloading materials and equipment in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, ice and wind.
- Ability to drive a large van using good judgment and safe driving skills.
- Ability to interact with the public, library staff, library volunteers, and other City departments in a friendly and inclusive manner.
- Ability to work in a collaborative, dynamic, fast-paced environment using excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and exercise good critical thinking skills while representing the library in the community.
- Proficiency with electronic resources, Microsoft Office applications, social networking sites, and mobile technology.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must possess a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards). Out of state applicants must provide current driving record at time of application and obtain State of Michigan license within one month of appointment.
- As a condition of employment, will be required to obtain a Chauffeur License and Medical Card as required by the State of Michigan by date of hire.
- As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen (including marijuana).
PREFERENCES
- Public Library experience.
- Experience with community engagement or outreach services, especially with a diverse population.
- Current Chauffeur License.
- Knowledge of Polaris Library System software.
HOURS: Part-time, year-round. Average of twenty (20) hours per week. Schedule will include day, evening, and weekend shifts.
